The naturalist Almantas Kulbis tells the tv3.lt news portal that this year’s winter will probably be reminiscent of last year: when the flowers bloomed in December, mushrooms grew and the animals from winter hibernation.
“Last winter was very warm, so the story of when the stepmother sent violets to search for winter was very obvious,” says A. Kulbis.
According to the naturalist, not only did the lights bloom in winter, but all the infinity of other flowers were found in nature.
“Last year we were able to find flowering plants throughout the year. They can be divided into two parts: those that have flowered “by mistake” and those that have flowered in Europe throughout the year. The “wrong” flowers that were supposed to bloom in spring blossomed in late fall. And the ones that bloom in Europe throughout the year were also noticed, I was photographed because there was simply no snow, ”says the naturalist.
Another anomaly from last winter, which can also be expected this year, is the mushroom harvest.
“We had mushrooms all year. The mushrooms that went to the forest found squirrels in the forest at Christmas. Of course, their quality is not clear there, because they may have been extracted and it is not very healthy to eat them, but the mere fact that the edible squirrel appears is already very interesting, ”says A. Kulbis.
A. Kulbis tells the mushrooms not to be too happy, because the forecasts are partly speculation, and we will see exactly what winter will be like when it arrives.
“During this Christmas, some squirrels may like some mushrooms, but nature is unpredictable. Yes, the general trend is that winters are getting warmer, but in fact, as experience shows, it is between those winters that those who winter and invade each other are warming up, surprising with the cold.
And the forecast from a natural point of view is not very scientific. The type of fur or fat layer that the animals grow during the winter is not justified. Winter is what it is. Neither the animals know what it will be like, nor can they say exactly what the naturalists will be, “says naturalist A. Kulbis to the news portal tv3.lt.
Don’t expect snow
Climatologist Justinas Kilpys predicts that this winter will be several degrees warmer than last year.
“It seems that both autumn and winter will be warm. If we talk about November, then the average temperature in Lithuania is about 2 degrees of heat, so it is likely that the average for this year will be about 4 degrees,” he says. the climatologist.
Kilpys also says that, however, surprises can be expected.
“Looking at the trends of the last decades, such extreme changes dominate. Although the temperature can be positive, any December, at the end of December, on such cold days, when the cold invades and the temperature drops suddenly, snow falls, it really can be, – says J. Kilpys to the news portal tv3.lt .
When asked if sleds should be winterizing, the climatologist advises that no long-term snow should be expected this year.
“Sudden changes in the weather are becoming more and more common, and it is possible that the snow will fall for a short time this year and melt in a few days. The past year has been like this: the snow falls, lasts a week and It is melting. Something similar is likely to happen this year as well. There will likely be some snow, but it will definitely not last, and it won’t last from December to March, “says climatologist J. Kilpys.
Due to the warmer winters: new species in Lithuania
Naturalist A. Kulbis warns that due to increasingly warmer winters each year, new species of plants and animals arrive in Lithuania.
“Animals, like worshipers, are coming to our lands, expanding their range from southern Poland to Lithuania or even Estonia. The variety of heat-loving animals and plants is naturally propagated. Of course, plants travel much slower than pilgrims or birds capable of flight, but those winters will traditionally be warmer, as will the inhabitants of hot countries, ”says naturalist A. Kulbis.
