“The insertion of a product that neutralizes unpleasant odors has already begun at the city’s main wastewater pumping station on Senosios Smiltelės Street. The chemical is constantly dripping into the wastewater stream with a special dispenser, and when they flow through the pipe, a chemical reaction occurs: iron chloride neutralizes hydrogen sulfide, reminiscent of the smell of a rotten egg. ” , says the municipality of the city of Klaipėda.
According to the municipality, this technology was chosen based on the experience of foreign water management companies and the results of the experimental research carried out by the Klaipėdos vanduo company in late 2019.
“Continuing with the company’s odor reduction program, iron chloride is planned to be added to the sludge mixing tank of the Dumpiai wastewater treatment plant soon. This will be the third of seven planned measures that Klaipedos Vanduo, a company controlled by the Klaipeda city municipality, intends to implement this year, ”the report reads.
The municipality of the port city affirms that, according to specialists, the intensity of unpleasant odors in wastewater is related to natural conditions: outdoor air temperature, falling rainfall. During the summer, with high air temperatures and decreasing volumes of wastewater, decomposition processes accelerate.
According to Benitas Jonikas, CEO of Klaipėda Water, natural phenomena are not the only cause of unpleasant odors.
“When it comes to the source of odors, drinking habits are a big factor. If food or other organic wastes are discharged into the sewer, decomposition processes can start in the pipe that leaves the house, and as a result , unpleasant odors are formed in city sewer networks. In our company’s divisions, we can control odor reduction processes, and we do, but unfortunately, what is happening in the pipes of residential services, from catering and other city services is not like that, ”he said.
According to Klaipėda Municipality, statistical data shows that over the decade, the amount of waste collected from the incoming sewage stream at the Dumpiai sewage treatment plant has more than doubled, from 130 to 270 tons per year .
“This shows that consumers are throwing away more and more than they shouldn’t be in the sewer, that is, waste that promotes decomposition,” the report said.
Klaipeda residents have complained about the smell in the city for many years.
