He appreciated the surprise prepared by the conservatives for Nausėda: they want to show who really governs the country

The ruling Conservative Party promises to raise the question of who should represent Lithuania in the European Council (EVS), the president or the prime minister, during this session of the Seimas.

Conservative Matas Maldeikis is drafting a separate law. It would regulate the representation of the state in the EVS.

“I hope that everything is resolved as soon as possible. Because we are not interested in the issue continuing for a long time,” explained the parliamentarian.

However, M. Maldeikis has not yet revealed what would be written in that law, if the leaders should rotate or if only the Prime Minister should represent them.

“I just want to leave some intrigue, that element, we’ll see,” he told LNK News.

The initiative for such a law came when the head of the country G. Nausėda emphasized that he did not intend to end the established tradition. And that he will continue to attend meetings in Brussels.

“There are countries where these issues have been addressed by law, there are countries where they have not. There is no law in Lithuania that establishes it as it is now. I have not yet commented on whether a different law is needed, “explained Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

Former Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis also agrees that a new tradition is needed. Because part of the debate in Brussels is government affairs. According to the former head of government, the president should reach a good agreement with the prime minister to rotate.

“If it is necessary to regulate this kind of thing by law, it will be the battalions. And it will be quite difficult,” S. Skvernelis told LNK News.

As prime minister, he never attended EVS meetings. Although he says Dalia Grybauskaitė had promised it to him.

“It was suggested that we share, but somehow there was not a single tip with the prime minister’s questions. There was an overlap all the time, I was a bit of a cartoonist, ”S. Skvernelis told reporters.

Some MPs question whether the country needs a law tailored to the country’s two leaders.

Remigijus Žemaitaitis, a representative of the mixed group of members of the Seimas, says that the conservatives want to show who really rules the country.

“The people gather, they do not decide this issue, the 3 conservative patriarchs who have competence to represent Lithuania and who do not,” explained the politician in his position.

G. Nausėda has said that if such a law emerges, it will contradict the Constitution and therefore veto it.

“It really is a good lesson here for G. Nausėda for showing great support for the conservatives before the elections. In Lithuania we are very aware that if you give the conservatives a finger, they will scratch their hand. It is in this place that the conservatives carry not only the hand of G. Naus ,da, but also his head, “said R. Žemaitaitis ironically.

Critics say conservatives apply different standards. Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius once gave this place to Mr. Grybauskaitė himself.

“When the crisis started, we found it really useful for her to try to fight there, using all her experience on issues important to us,” A. Kubilius told LNK News.

The conservative M. Maldeikis assured that he is proposing this project on his own initiative, and no one from the party leadership has asked him to do so.

“I spoke about it before the elections,” said Seimas member M. Maldeikis.
