Nancy Pelosi seeks to prohibit the use of gender-sensitive terms such as mother, daughter, father, son.
The portal minfo.lt, and a previous spreader of misleading news (eg, P. eg, P. eg, P. eg, in which it is expected to present proposals aimed at abolishing terms such as father, mother, son and daughter ”(past aut. – language unchanged) It is proposed to change these words in gender-neutral terms.
The point of referring to the use of gender neutral terms is discussed in detail in the article. It reads:
‘In Article 8 (C) (3) of Rule XXIII, the words that define the sex of a person, such as’ father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-father, mother-in-law, son-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, stepson, stepfather, stepfather, stepmother, cousin, cousin, grandson or granddaughter ».
Instead, terms such as “father, son, brother and sister, father’s brother, cousin, sister’s son, spouse, father-in-law, stepfather, grandson” should be used.
It is obvious that this part of the message was translated from English, because some of the terms used in the document do not have gender-neutral equivalents when translated into Lithuanian. For example, the original document suggested changing the English terms “brother” or “sister” to gender-neutral “brothers.”
There is also an error in the text: Ms. Pelosi is called the President of the White House, when in fact she is the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Most importantly, however, the discussion about the Speaker of the House of Representatives’ intentions does not mention the essential part itself: these amendments do not seek to completely ban the use of gender terms. Pelosi proposes changing the terminology in the text of a single specific document, the House Rules, and does not touch on other areas.
The House of Representatives rules partly define the operation of the House of Representatives and are modified slightly each time after the election. On January 1, Mr. Pelosi, together with Mr. McGovern, proposed precisely that package of amendments, which included the replacement of these concepts with gender-neutral concepts with the same meaning. However, these changes will only be reflected in the aforementioned document and will not affect how elected representatives interact with each other or what concepts they will use in public speeches.
The media report, which explains why one or another proposal has been presented, highlights that the change in deadlines is aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity.
Taking this information into account, Melo Detektorius considers that the message that appeared in minfo.lt is partially incorrect. While it correctly refers to the proposed amendment point, neither the title of the text nor the text itself states that these amendments are relevant only in relation to a single document, House of Representatives rules, text, and other areas. In this way, readers are misled, they form their negative opinion regarding the mentioned changes.
