On Monday evening, 5 percent of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library gathered. The leaders of the party lists that passed through the electoral poster discussed the results of the first round and what to expect in two weeks. The Lithuanian Political Forum was also attended by Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, President of the Liberal Movement, Vigilijus Jukna, Leader of the Labor Party List, Saulius Skvernelis, Leader of the Lithuanian Green and Peasant Party List, and Saulius Skvernelis, Leader of the Union of the Homeland-Lithuanian Christian Democrats. .
The broad coalition proposed by TS-LKD: what is it?
“The main idea was that we gather parties that value certain values. Not just solutions that we will talk a lot about in the debate <...>, but also those values for which we lacked responsibilities. First of all, we are talking about respect for freedom of expression, the rule of law, democratic principles, which we, as a European State, must defend. The idea is more than all the political forces that want to join the decisions in the areas that are most important to us and to defend, defend and defend these values in individual cases when necessary. These could be components of such a consensus, ”said I. Šimonytė.
Although the possibilities of forming a center-left coalition are more theoretical, S. Skvernel has not yet ruled out such a possibility: “Everything is real until the second round is over. <...> Today we have a situation in which the right is leading for several terms, but in the second round we will still see how people vote.<...> I think it will certainly not be the case for TS-LKD only one hundred percent. will win, or LVŽS. It’s good that we as potential partners don’t have a lot of struggles, just a few districts. “
Who will support what in the second round?
When debating the election results in the board on Monday, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party also spoke about what it will invite to support in the second round of elections in those single-member states where the Social Democrats themselves will not compete. According to the party president, everything is quite simple and elementary: the left will support the left and will receive the same support. LSDP will fight in 12 single-member.
“We accept offers of help from the left. <...> It is quite natural that former candidates and left-wing parties in their center are rallying, trying to mobilize a left-wing voter so that there are more left-wing Seimas members in the Seimas.<...> There are 12 single members, we go and win. Where the relationship with fellow peasants will somehow be discovered on the spot. There are three. And where the relationship with the right-wing parties is, it will undoubtedly come en masse and mobilize the left-wing voter of the center-left party. “Paluck said.
J. Jukna, the leader of the Labor Party list, said that so far he has not specifically spoken in the party about supporting other parties and candidates, but will do so in the party presidium in the near future.
According to V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, president of the Liberal Movement, it is too early to speak of the evident cooperation between the Conservatives and the Liberal Movement, as the party is independent and still expects a good match in the second round, where they will compete for seats. in the Seimas. Of these, up to six will meet with representatives of the Conservatives.
“It would be normal to speak before the second round, but I still cannot say about the agreements. We will discuss in the party meeting if we refer to support for any other party or political force. We will do so in a few days, in the near future.<...> I do not rule out the possibility that in cases where TS-LKD competes with the Freedom Party, we are neutral, but it also depends on specific personalities, departments, cities, etc. ”Said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
What did the first round of the elections show?
Speaking about the message that voters sent, all participants in the discussion agreed that voters made it clear that they wanted change.
“These elections have shown that our society is different from what some people in the public sphere or politicians of the Seimas interpret. People want positive policies, they want to talk about the future, they want to delve less into what has been in the past. It also shows that society is beginning to be dominated not only by the need for material goods, which is still important, but also by the education of post-material values, such as respect for human rights, as a priority.<...> I would like us not to lose the content and priorities of politics in this technocratic discussion, who will attract and support what ”, said A. Armonaitė, leader of the Freedom Party, who surprised many with the result.
“First of all, there is no place in Lithuania for this policy and agenda, which aims at eternal struggle with some ambitions of imperialism, globalism and the like. We certainly have a cartel of traditional parties from the past, in addition to a party for the freedom that has achieved a great result in this election.<...> Many parties were left behind the board, which had a very radical agenda on many issues. <...> Still, voters overlooked a slightly different policy.<..> It is possible to throw axes here and try to explain that this is the enemy of Lithuania, but no one is an enemy of Lithuania and we want good for Lithuania. Maybe we just understand differently how to achieve that good, ”said I. Šimonytė.
“The voters have shown they want change.<...>Personally, it makes me happy. I think the time has come for a slightly different politician. Now this is just an intermediate result. In a couple of weeks, we’ll see how a very important part of the puzzle comes together<..> and we will see if those changes will take place, ”said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
“There is a saying ‘bread and games’. That’s when the problem of bread is solved, the need for someone else arises. <...> There is a part of Lithuania that lives saturated and calm, it wants changes, different priorities. The election results showed that we are different and that is very good. Now it’s just a matter of how to reconcile those different interests and priorities again. Nothing strange, tragic or bad has happened, “said S. Skvernelis.
The Labor Party is satisfied with the results of the elections. According to the leader of your list, this is not a coincidence, but the result of work.
“It is a success for the Labor Party and it was not by accident. We have very responsibly prepared the party program, assembled a competent team to implement it, selected the best candidate for prime minister, Viktor Uspaskich, and declared it from the beginning, ”said V. Jukna.
This election is much sadder for the Social Democrats, who were probably replaced by the Labor Party by some voters. Still, the party chairman said he saw a bright future for the Social Democrats.
“We have been on a path of renewal for the last four years, it is not only the values that the Social Democrats needed to return to during this period, but it is also a broadening of the electoral base.
It is obvious that we are under pressure from both sides (Labor Party and LVŽS – ed. Past.). and colleagues from the Labor Party performed very well in rural areas, regions where we were generally strong. This shows the great social exclusion that exists in Lithuania, when people promise, for a better life. <..> choose to vote.<..> I’m a great optimist and I believe in the future of the Social Democrats, ”said Paluck.
A. Armonaitė speculated that a young voter who voted for the first time was probably choosing the Freedom Party this time, but added that his party’s success in the elections was also determined by the fact that the party offered an ambitious plan to long term. “We often think in averages: the EU average is the same. I would like to have ambitions. Yes, not all at once, not all today, but you need to have a plan. The Freedom Party proposed a program for 10 years, which was also evaluated by TSPMI professors. It seems to me that people also wanted the perspective of looking at that perspective, finding themselves on the political path, “said A. Armonaitė.
The program also discussed the priorities of the Freedom Party and how they would fit with the values of the TS-LKD if the parties decided to join the coalition.
“If there was such a conversation, it would be difficult, but we will deal with the final, after those 12 second rounds that we will have with the Homeland Union.<..> The priorities would be education, human rights<..> and those cheap things.<...>The union of the homeland is now positioned as the party of the economic left, we must see what would be offered to the left and what is our relationship with it. We are a classical liberal organization that represents a person who creates a job for himself and for others and more freedom for himself. A. Armonaitė named his priorities.
