Half a year of learning from home: relentless teachers, more opportunities to cheat, and “invisible difficulties” for graduates

Back in the fall, seniors had to switch to distance education.

According to Sara Aškinytė, president of the Lithuanian Student Union, it is more difficult to study in this way and it is said that it takes more to strive for a good grade.

“But those who have had good grades in the past, who have tended to study well, are investing time, making an effort and are not in big trouble. But for those who find it more difficult, learning becomes even more difficult and better results become even more difficult to achieve. ” 15 minutes she commented.

Dainius Žvirdauskas, Director of KTU Engineering Lyceum, also agreed with this.

“They do not find any special change in learning to be more motivated, but for those who lacked motivation for various reasons, they get even more entangled in inconsistent learning, they have significantly more losses,” said the head of the institution.

The losses are already there and will be in the future.

Learning with the help of technology, he said, is definitely better than nothing, but it will never be the same as ordinary lessons:

“We just realized that there would be no illusions. Losses are and will be in the future. But I think they are smaller than if we did not have such communications, Internet connection, media. “

More fraud opportunities through billing

According to D.Žvirdauskas, teachers’ abilities to teach distance lessons are improving, but things are slower, students receive less individual attention, and it is much more difficult to get their feedback.

“If we have poorer feedback, we also have worse results,” said the director of the high school.

In addition, the students, he said, learned to cheat: “Sometimes, when writing reports, there are situations where it is a connection, it is a camera that does not work. There are all kinds of tricks. “

The children say they had internet, the connection was lost, the puppy had broken the cable.

Lilija Bručkienė, a teacher of Lithuanian language and literature at the Klaipėda Vydūnas Gymnasium, supported him.

According to her, distance learning is undoubtedly more than the academic injustice of the Dutch.

“Children are children, some of whom have abused, used academic and school dishonesty, and now the technical possibilities for that are much greater. <...> The children say that for them the internet and the connection have disappeared, the puppy has broken the cord ”, related the teacher about her experience.

Distance learning is rarely particularly appropriate

He assured that children who were motivated in the past knew how to plan their time, they worked with determination, they do it now, and for the unmotivated, it is more difficult for parents to put more effort into encouraging them.

“It is much more difficult and difficult for them now, because there are many more temptations and competition with hard work at home than in the lesson,” said the teacher.

The cases in which distance education is more suitable for a child because he learns at his own pace, he may experience less stress than in school and thus improve his skills, according to L. Bručkienė, are isolated.

“But the trend is that absolutely everyone misses school, loses natural communication and is tired of such a dictated routine,” concluded the teacher.

It’s hard to keep up with topics

L. Bručkienė, who has been distance teaching for some time, said that she no longer feels tension, but this way of teaching, according to her, takes a long time.

“Distance learning processes are much longer, because when preparing lessons, it is necessary to re-prepare everything, they master completely different methods. Private life, free time and work have changed their proportions so much … This is a very difficult period. In practice, there is not much time to rest on weekdays and he stays, ”said the teacher.

There is not much time to rest during the week and he stays.

When asked if students managed to get off topic, keep up with the program, they admitted that there is a delay.

“There are programs [išeinamos] slower, let’s see how it will be until spring. When [nuotoliniu būdu] we work in the spring, so we finish some tracks in the fall. We will fix ourselves one way or another, there are no solutions, ”said L. Bruckienė.

This year, he admitted not paying graduates, but said he had one last year.

He passed the exams successfully, even when he was studying at home.

They also studied remotely for some time, but according to L. Bruckienė they passed the exams successfully, depending on their level of knowledge.

“Those who were motivated worked with determination and responsibility. And for those who were unmotivated, it was very difficult.

They consoled themselves that at school you don’t want to be forced to listen to the teacher for 45 minutes, still listen to something. And when you’re sitting at home, you can put on your headphones, look at the screen, but do whatever you want.

There is a great need for awareness, ”emphasized the Lithuanian language and literature teacher.

Even though the students are preparing for the maturity tests at home, they should pass.

It is true that graduates will not have to take the Lithuanian language and literature exam, and some parts of the exams will be done remotely.

Rating is not the answer

The opinion of students on whether the exams should be taken or not differs, said S.Aškinytė. But, according to her, no one else would evaluate her knowledge and guarantee a level playing field.

“Students are divided into several groups; some think that the exams should not be taken. But for now, if we think about graduates who want to take a year for free, or who are going to study abroad, there would be no other way to evaluate them, colleges could not organize admissions.

And judging by the annual averages, in fact, there are too big differences between the schools and the quality of education, it would be very inappropriate ”, said the student representative.

The students made suggestions on how to organize the tests: they wanted them to last longer and also asked that the math test be made easier.

Offers to reduce the number of creative tasks

Last year, it was this exam that caused the most difficulties for graduates.

“We agreed that the math test would be a little easier and there would be a little more type B homework,” said S.Aškinytė.

We agreed that the math test would be a bit easier and there would be a bit more type B homework.

Student suggestions will be taken into account, he said.

According to D. Žvirdauskas, the experts who prepare the exam tasks must take into account the fact that the graduates studied independently for much of the time.

“The graduates of this fair face unprecedented difficulties, they will not be compared with those programs that worked in typical contact conditions,” said the director of the KTU Engineering School.

As a result, he said, there could be fewer creative tasks on the exam assignments.

“It would be worth discussing the increase in the number of repetitive tasks on exams compared to creative ones. Those more complex creative tasks require a higher expression of IQ, knowledge, the ability to synthesize information. This launch could have a different structure in the tasks ”, considered D. Žvirdauskas.

Sixth and seventh grade students must also return to school

Graduates, along with newcomers, are considered to be among the first to return to networking. The director of the high school said that he agreed with this order.

After that, according to him, students in grades 6-7 could also return.

“Those in ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade already have maturity, independence, and those in sixth and seventh grade during the period of intensive adolescence, it seems to me, there is another group of students who should be invited to contact work,” he commented. D .Žvirdauskas.

It also welcomed the Government’s decision to return children who grow up in families at social risk to schools:

“Now there are three students working in our high school, four next week, and maybe even more. <...> We are already waiting for better conditions for these students ”.

Significantly did not deteriorate

National Education Agency (NSA) 15 minutes indicated that it has begun to collect data on the annual assessments of students in grades 5 – I, so it will only be possible to determine in the summer of 2021 if distance education has had any effect on student achievement.

True, the NSA noted that the annual assessments of those who were already studying remotely and taking exams were about the same as in previous years when they were studying normally.

“Comparing the annual assessments of students who passed the state gym enrollment exams class III in 2020 and 2019, they do not differ or differ very slightly. For example, foreign language (English) equals 7.5; mathematics: 6.7 and 6.8, respectively; Lithuanian language and literature are the same – 6.9 “, – the answer is written.

The main session of state maturity testing should begin April 7-9 of this year.
