Marius Grigonis’s three-year career stage in the ranks of Kaunas “Žalgiris” has ended. Next season, Žalgiris will represent the CSKA Moscow club, with whom he has signed a long-term three-year contract, valid until 2024. summer.

Points are earned this season

This season, the universal defender, who was leader of the Kaunas team in the Euroleague, said goodbye to Kaunas with a long three points and won the trophy in the last match of the Betsafe – LKL final series.

Before moving to the new club, Grigonis told the team on Žalgiris TV about his year at Žalgiris and the decision to move to CSKA in his last interview in the green jersey.

“It just came to our attention then. I couldn’t be uncomfortable here. I spent so much time with my family that I was able to be with friends. When the season started, I didn’t want to think about the future, but already during the season, the offers started to float.

Of course, the first thought comes immediately: you don’t want to be sad and leave the team. Whoever communicates with me knows what the club and the city mean to me. Sadness comes, but then you understand everything. You want to reach the highest goals, move up and improve. Such suggestions were not carried out. No person who thought logically would have rejected such an offer, ”said Grigonis.

The CSKA team, a regular participant in the four finalists and twice coached by Euroleague champion Dimitrius Itoudis, netted Grigonis throughout the season. Grigonis, one of the most sought-after defenders on the European player market, explains that it would have been difficult to refuse such an offer from the Moscow team.

“First of all, from a sporting point of view, you want to achieve and choose as much as possible and be the best player. How long have we played basketball? 10 years? Okay, Jankis has been playing for 30 years. A normal player plays for 10-15 years. He wants to get as much as possible from that year. The Moscow team is one of the best in Europe and it is difficult to refuse his offer, “said the basketball player.

Grigonis, who is leaving Žalgiris, assures that he will continue to follow the team’s results and will continue to be a great fan of the green-whites. At the end of the conversation, the basketball player made it clear that he would always like to return to the Kaunas team should circumstances arise.

I always want “the best and brightest future” for “Žalgiris”. This year it was a mix between the remaining players from the Shar era and the seasoned basketball players who came with Martin Schiller. We help each other. The coach will have more experience next year, he has learned a lot from this difficult season.

It all depends on what the budget will be, which players will come. You have to leave a lot of details to get things right. I will always support “Žalgiris”, and the path of the basketball player is unknown. Just because I’m gone doesn’t mean it’s forever, “Marius said.
