What to do with green tomatoes? When does your harvest end? How to accelerate its maturation?
Lina Liubertaitė says that September does not mean that the tomato harvest is coming to an end. “Indeterminate tomatoes grow like vines and if conditions are favorable, we would eat our own tomatoes in December as well, because the growth of tomatoes would not stop. However, in the Lithuanian climate, the growth of tomatoes is stopped by several factors: climate change, lack of sun, shorter days, falling temperatures ”, says L. Liubertaitė.
Tomatoes begin to turn yellow, tire, become smaller and more difficult to ripen, but the conditions in the greenhouse are much better for them than in the field. Maintaining healthy tomatoes in the field is more difficult because it rains and tomatoes do not like the humidity of the leaves, they can start to wither faster or contract one disease or another.

“If you manage to keep the tomatoes healthy, the fruit ripens slowly, but the weather is unfavorable, you can pick and ripen the fruit at home. In this case, we also save the plant’s energy, since the intensity of growth is currently decreasing, “says Lina.
The harvest also ends with diseases.
Lina also mentions another common reason why our tomatoes can suffer: various diseases. Diseases also depend on the weather, for example, last year it was quite humid in June, so at that time tomatoes were a lot of fungal diseases.
“This summer was extremely hot, but already in August the temperature began to drop, the rains became more frequent and this climate is conducive to the spread of various diseases. Also, when the fog starts, these diseases spread at lightning speed, ”says Lina.
If you want to speed up the ripening process of tomatoes, put a banana next to it.
She says that some diseases are not directly dangerous to tomato fruits, such as brown spot, but they weaken the plant itself.
The most dangerous disease for the tomato fruit, the blogger calls it the tomato plague, with which the end of the harvest arrives.
“It is possible that in this case I will pick the green tomatoes to destroy the infection as soon as possible and thus end the tomato season much earlier,” says Lina.
What to do with green tomatoes or just beginning to ripen?
The blogger advises to put the tomatoes on the windowsill and ripen, be sure to keep them in a dry place. They can be arranged in a single layer in cardboard boxes, plastic (with holes). It is very important not to overload, to ensure air circulation, otherwise the tomatoes may start to rot before they are ripe.
“Check the tomatoes that ripen every few days and pick them again if necessary. It is more convenient to store tomatoes, if they are small, in a conspicuous place in the kitchen. And if you have more of them, it will be convenient to store them in boxes in a dark place, the most important thing is to keep them dry.
If you want to speed up the ripening process of tomatoes, put a banana next to it. It releases ethylene and therefore the tomatoes ripen faster. It is important not to overdo it, so that tomatoes, especially large fruits, ripen evenly, it is better to let it happen naturally, “advises Lina.
