Grades of “Žalgiris”: M. Grigonis, having a hard time in the ten-point system, and a strong back

On Wednesday night, Kaunas Žalgiris delivered a holiday gift to his fans and beat Bayern Munich basketball players 74:73 at home in a sticky and nervous match. This was Žalgiris’ ninth victory this season in the Euroleague, and it was decided by Marius Grigonis with a victorious pitch late in the match.

The Krepsinis.net portal reviewed the individual performance of Kaunas residents and rated it with ratings.

# 0 Thomas Walkup (23 min, 6 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 pm, 6 pts). Rating – 5.

In such matches based on physicality and hard fights, the American usually feels quite bad, but this time he could not avoid mistakes and hasty decisions. In the first half of the match, Th.Walkup missed two free throws and seemed to signal a break in rhythm. Although Žalgiris held a solid 8-point lead in the third after his peaceful long-range shot, he was not confident in the player’s actions during the deciding quarter. Two errors in a row had greatly aggravated the situation for the Kaunas team, and several times the player simply cooked the ball too much and “Žalgiris” attacks ended in nothing.

Lekavičius
Lekavičius

# 4 Lukas Lekavičius (19 min, 5 points, 1 rep, 5 res, 1 rep, 4 p., 4 p.). Rating – 5.

The problem for “Žalgiris” in this match was too many mistakes, and L.Lekavičius couldn’t avoid them either. Even in the last quarter, the organizer of the attacks once incorrectly passed the ball to R. Jokubaitis, and once in the attack he broke into the opponent and was fouled. It is true that we saw a similar situation on the other side of the square, when L. Lekavičius took a good defensive position and caused the lack of DJ Seeley. On defense, Žalgiris looked pretty solid and memorized just one episode, leaving DJSeeley himself behind him as the latter crossed to the basket. In the attack several times, L. Lekavičius evaluated the situations well, distributed the balls well to his teammates and provided 5 assists. The attacks of “Žalgiris” were quite static and exhausting at the same time, so the sharpness of this defender allowed to create opportunities for shots and made it a bit easier to accumulate points.

# 10 Nigel Hayes (32 minutes, 3 pts, 4 bounces, 2 res., 1 res., 3 bl., 1 bl., 4 pur.). Rating – 4.

It was also one of the most difficult games for Hayes. The tall man, who had lost everything until then, however, did notice an important triple in the fourth quarter and thus slightly corrected his performance. The American played more than all the Žalgiris players and looked a bit out of shape. When you play for so many minutes, the blow often suffers. However, in defending the team, Hayes did an important job and contributed significantly to the German club scoring just 73 points.

# 13 Paulius Jankūnas (11 min., 8 sts, 3 reps, 1 res., 1 rep., 1 p., 11 points). Rating – 8.

P.Jankūnas immediately brought a lot of positive energy to Kaunas’ game in the first half. His rebounds in attack and fouls caused by opponents allowed Žalgiris to create an even double-digit lead – 22:11. Too bad that advantage could not be maintained any longer, and in the second half of the game the captain played a lot. However, an important moment took place at the end of the second part, when P. Jankūnas came into conflict with Jalen Reynolds, when the latter pushed M. Grigonis. The opponents played solid basketball in this match and Žalgiris had to find players who could respond at the same time. It was even a bit strange that we didn’t see a solid-looking veteran playing in the slightest room.

# 21 Artūras Milaknis (23 min, 11 points, 1 rep, 1 res., 2 reps, 13 points). Rating – 8.

Most of the good work was done by the sniper in the first half of the game, and his last points in this game turned into a three-point shot late in the third quarter. In the positional attack, the sniper from Žalgiris had a hard time finding opportunities for long shots, but in the transition he made three long shots and noticed them all. Kaunas residents often punish their opponents with three points this season even after rebounds, but Bayern had done their homework and Žalgiris had a second chance. The appearance of a sniper naturally depends on the performance of his throws, and when he is at 100% when attacking from a distance, no major reproaches can be made.

# 24 Augustine Rubit (19 min, 9 pts, 5 pts, 1 pp, 13 pts). Rating – 8.

A. Rubitas was active and notorious again in the attack. The American knew how to occupy positions well and cause fouls to opponents and did not look bad in exchange situations. However, A. Rubitas lost much of his physique to J. Reynolds, and the latter easily managed the high-rise defense of “Žalgiris”. It was this game of the rival center that caused the Kaunas team the most problems during all the games, so in the decisive minutes A.Rubitas had to sit on the bench.

# 31 Rokas Jokubaitis (18 min., 2 points, 1 rep., 4 res., 1 bl., -1 useful ball). Rating – 4.

Although R. Jokubaitis was the rarest of all basketball players on the perimeter of “Žalgiris”, this match was the most difficult for him. The young offensive organizer got into the rival defense and although he made 4 assists, he lacked his most active game and better assessment of situations. R. Jokubaitis also had a number of problems stopping his direct opponents, who repeatedly tried to attack this particular player from “Žalgiris”. Naturally, the game of such a young basketball player is not stable yet, so it is realistic that in the next game we will see the best version of this player again.

Grigonis
Grigonis

# 40 Marius Grigonis (31 min., 22 points, 3 reps, 2 res., 2 reps, 3 p., 23 helpful votes). Rating – 10.

M. Grigonis would have received a ten even if he had missed the decisive pitch at the end of the match. It became a “cherry” and until then a fantastic game of defense. Although it can be said that this is another great evaluation of this basketball player, but this time M. Grigonis often surpassed even himself. Although he managed to score just 1 of three points out of 6, and his opponents were perfectly prepared to neutralize the leader of “Žalgiris”, M. Grigonis’ astute play allowed him to pick points, provoking fouls from opponents and sharpening the game with advances. The Lithuanian has taken incredible form and is currently one of the hottest basketball players in the Euroleague.

# 77 Jofrey Lauvergne (21 min, 8 pts, 6 rebounds, 1 rebound, 3 rebounds, 11 helpful votes). Rating – 8.

Although Lauvergne failed to defend Reynolds, he was the best option in the situation. The Frenchman even managed to provoke a direct foul from the opponent in the attack in the fourth quarter. The tall man from “Žalgiris” made excellent use of the opportunities created for him and realized the 4 points from two points. A spoonful of tar could have been Lauvergne’s foul late in the fourth quarter, after which Nick Weiler-Babb also scored “out of the game.” Fortunately, “Žalgiris” then managed to organize a successful attack, so the cost of the French mistake decreased.
