In a Twitter post on Saturday, G. Nausėda also called for the release of those detained during Saturday’s mass protests to support opposition leader Alexei Navalna.
“Lithuania strongly condemns the brutal arrests of peaceful protesters in Russia in support of A. Navalns. The denial of the rights of the political opposition is a return to the Stalin era.” Illegally detained protesters, including Navaln’s wife, must be released immediately, “wrote the president.
Previously, the arrests were condemned by Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who called it a “sign of weakening of the regime” and also called for the release of the detainees.
Almost 2,000 people were reported in Russia on Saturday. Massive protests of dozens of detainees in dozens of cities to show solidarity with the prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalnu arrested. Among those arrested were A. Navalna’s wife, Julia Navalnaya, and her comrades.
Putin, Putin’s most active critic, who called for mass protests, returned to Moscow last weekend after spending several months in Germany, where he was treated with Novičiok, a substance that paralyzes the nerves after poisoning. He was arrested at the Sheremetyevo airport and taken to a detention center.
These protests in Moscow are considered the largest since 2019, when Navaln supporters took to the streets to demand free local elections.
