The Vilniusns won the LKL quarter-finals and semi-finals without a loss, but they were not victorious in the final and lost 3-0 to multiple LKL champions in the series.
“Congratulations to Kaunas” Žalgiris “, well deserved title, respect for them,” Žibėnas said at the press conference. – We were in the game for a long time today, but we got killed again for trivia. Once again, the same things that haunted us in tougher matches. Same for today, but I’m certainly not ashamed that such a team loses this game and this series. The series showed our gaps. We will have a lot of material to form a new team ”.
– Coaches, how will you remember this season in person?
– It can be described in one word: growth. Adapt to new situations every day. The season has paid off a lot. And the first, and especially the second part (after becoming head coach – aut. Past). Adapting not so much to basketball and changing teams, but to the tough season of the COVID-19 virus. We had a lot of hills and we survived this crucial stage of the season. I think the players gave a lot of positive emotions to the Ryto community and the fans. I really thanked the players for the big heart after the game, they represented the team and showed their love.
– What will the team be like next season?
– Like every coach, like every team, we want continuity. Each player comes with a question mark to possibly hold him and him. It would be possible to continue working with everyone because they are fighters. First we will see what we can stay in the team.
I won’t really say about the last names, but we lack athleticism and that’s what this series has shown. Playing as “Žalgiris”, you have a better understanding of your opportunities to compete with both Kaunas residents and FIBA Champions League teams. He showed direction. And the team will be made up of management, many will be joined by Donatas Zavackas, the coaching staff. Little by little we will form a team and start tomorrow.
– Are there players who will definitely leave?
– At the moment I do not know, or such information has not reached me.
– What happened to Augustas Marčiulionis, who got injured at the start of the match?
– You know, the youth team is expecting August right away. He flinched a bit as I listened, he was more scared than hurt. We didn’t want to take risks. Big compliments on growing up, as in the final series at this age he looked really good. I have nothing to hide, we will want to keep it.
– Andrew Goudelock finished the season with 16 consecutive games in a double-digit result, playing his most productive game today. How important is it to have a player with so much experience and how do you value working with him?
– I caught him immediately after the game and told him the season was “wow”. The first thing he needed after tough seasons was to play the entire season. Yes, there were some minor injuries that no one has. It was an achievement for him. The second thing: he loved the team, the locker room and sacrificed his body for what you saw on defense. He probably played in the first team he tried to defend, representing men.
Everything was good for him here, we also want to talk to him. There was already a conversation with him. We will see the possibilities of maintaining it. It is an example for all of us. You saw how many players played in the final for the first time. It is strong to have such a player by your side in the locker room and on the court. I am glad I had the opportunity to work with him.
