German MPs had previously approved an agreement with Airbus. Under the contract, the fighters will cost nearly $ 5.5 billion. and will be delivered in 2025-2030.
According to Berlin, the agreement is part of a plan adopted this year to replace the old Tornado fighters with 93 new European fighters and 45 American F-18 fighters.
The government of Chancellor Angela Merkel thus hopes to fulfill its commitments to NATO while supporting the European defense industry.
Although Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer hoped that MPs would be able to vote on acquiring American fighter jets before next fall’s elections, a vote on the project is currently scheduled for later.
Dirk Hoke, Airbus’ Director of Defense and Space, said Eurofighter fighter jets would be available until 2060 and beyond, and would be compatible with the next-generation European fighter currently in development, known as FCAS.
