The country’s disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), reported that 23,679 new infections had been confirmed in the country in the past 24 hours. The previous daily record was 23,648 cases on November 20.
The partial quarantine that began on November 2 did not allow the spread of the virus to accelerate, but the number of infections recorded per day has been roughly the same in recent weeks.
The country is increasingly likely to have stricter quarantine measures in place during the Christmas and New Year period. Some regions are already introducing new restrictions.
This is partly due to the recent significant increase in the number of deaths in Germany, which was low compared to several other European countries. A total of 440 new deaths were reported on Thursday, and a record 590 COVID-19 deaths per day were recorded on Wednesday.
In total, the pandemic has already claimed 20,372 lives in the country. Approximately 1.24 million cases of infection have been reported since the onset of the pandemic.
