Gedas and Daiva renovated a house built in 1926: fires, robberies and floods did not overshadow the joy of building a house in a natural refuge | Lifetime

The hosts, who are not lacking in humor, say that today they live as they want and are very happy with the house, although it took a long time before that, the repair itself took two years. With 15 minutes the family agreed to share their story.

The cabin, built in 1926, took its place

According to Daiva, the hostel is now 95 years old, so it will soon celebrate its anniversary. Gedas, the owner of the farmhouse, adds that he has seen everything in his house – and wars – because the roof was destroyed by fragments and natural elements – the locals said that a ball of lightning had entered it.

“We bought a house quite simply, we thought we wanted to live as close to nature as possible and as far as possible from the hustle and bustle of the city and people, so we started looking for a farm,” recalls Daiva.

The family discovered an advertisement in the newspaper and immediately went to see it. The farm was quite deserted, overgrown with weeds, grasses, bushes, yet it contained which immediately attracted the hosts. “I was fascinated by the place itself, there were many old trees, a wonderful 80-year-old linden and there was still oil in bloom, so we decided quickly,” Gedas recalls.

The farm is surrounded by a 40 acre parcel of land and even 3 hectares of agricultural land. Initially leasing agricultural fields to a farmer, today Gedas and Daiva planted almost the entire plot with pine and walnut trees, and in the future he is thinking of starting to cultivate, well, at least for him and for his own needs. “We will have something to do in old age, we can sell nuts,” laughs Ged.

Repairs with adventure

Daiva says she was scared when she saw how much work it would take to renovate the house because she says she had never faced such constructions and challenges. However, as the man was not afraid, had a lot of experience, she quickly became a great helper and collaborator and generator of ideas.

“The wife was more scared that the grass would not grow, because when the excavator pushed everything, I saw a clay, and after the rain it was possible to skid almost on skis. But everything went as well as possible, and the most difficult job to repair the house was to strengthen the foundation, because there were stones in some places and concrete in some places, so I had to put the work in.

Another problem, the house at that time had a very low ceiling – Daiva used to say – it was barely there, and our hairstyles are going to rest on the ceiling (Serie). So we had to lower the floor, now we have a normal 2.5m high ceiling.

We also had to take care of the logs in the log house, replace some with new ones, which were more damaged in the windows, build a column so that the corner of the house did not fall, and Daiva threw them all. the rusty nails in the walls. They said you don’t really need antiques, “Gedas says.

The spouses say that they did a lot with their own hands, but for specific jobs they turned to specialists for help: electrical, partly plumbing, foundation repair, the facade of the house was made with the help of professionals.

“It just came to our attention then. We spent every afternoon and weekend at home and what annoyed us the most was when the weather was not suitable for work; snow and rain prevented us from starting work, ”laughs Gedas, who renovated the house with his wife from scratch for two years.

Daiva does not skimp on the praise of her husband and says that he is a hard worker, skillful, he made a lot of furniture himself, so he took care of both the interior and the design of the house.

Floods, fires and theft

It is true that the whole story of home renovation and moving has another side. Now the hosts remember him with a smile, but then they did not laugh away.

For example, only after moving into the house a day later did he have to return to the rented apartment. “We moved in early spring and there was a lot of snow that winter. We used water from a well, but the melted water got into the water from the well, which is very deep, and while we were bathing we noticed that we were almost washing ourselves with sand, in the end, the water did not run off at all. laugh.

When they were walking towards the well, they heard the sounds of an avalanche coming down from the mountain: “We thought, maybe what underground river opened”, laugh Daiva and Gedas.

Initially saddened by such a failure and thinking that it would be difficult to restore the water from the well, the owners were able to return in a couple of weeks, because everything was resolved: they still use the water from the well today.

However, this was not the only challenge: they had to survive the robbery and fire before the well accident. Then the thieves took many valuables: “What we feel most unfortunate about the natural cherry wine in our garden (Serie), but we lost the bathroom, the tools, the lawn mower and many other things, ”the family recalls.

The fire broke out in May. “We burned garbage so I decided to put it in the outdoor bathroom. A very strong wind started to pick up and apparently blew the embers into a clown that contained hay. The flame was swallowed in an instant, so the firefighters no longer had nothing to do, and then the locals joked that we had specially burned the wooden clown so they didn’t have to disassemble it. In fact, we planned to use that wood to burn a solid boiler, but here the clown himself became a natural boiler ” says Gedas, who can now mock him.

Asked if it would not be easier to demolish a house and build a new one, the interlocutor says that it will not necessarily be cheaper to build a new house, but also to spend time and financial procedures. The price depends on whether you will do the repair work yourself, whether you will have to hire people, what the needs and whims of the owners are. “We wanted to move and live in nature as soon as possible, not handle paperwork for years,” says the family.

Take a break by planting trees, creating beautiful flower gardens, and have many more plans.

The family pays close attention to managing the environment, creating flower gardens. Daiva says that she tries to return as soon as possible after work in the city and enjoy field work, because she loves flower gardens very much and Gedas is also sympathetic to plants.

“I have dug around 700 wells; I could already be a professional miner. We joke that maybe the house owners were hiding something in the ground, because during each excavation we found metal, iron ends; after adding the repairs, we made quite a bit of money By the way, my life’s dream was to have a garden with a variety of plants, ”Ged jokes, recalling that his talent as a gardener once appeared in an apartment building and then planted a vine that grew to the fourth floor. in a few years.

Together with his wife, who is the greatest connoisseur of flower gardens, they create an environment by planting trees and various plants. I had to work a lot and improve the primer, but today the image is really eye-catching.

“It is a great pleasure for me to take care of the home and the environment, it is a refreshment for the soul. I am a generator of ideas, I can think of all kinds of jobs. We are currently building a greenhouse and in the future a sauna is being built We cannot be silent, ”laughs Daiva, who has had a love for flowers since childhood and admires the changing environment in the garden.

Gedas yells at his wife and tells her that he is happy with the snack and the peace at home today: “We dropped phones and took care of plants and trees. It really is a good break. Deer don’t talk to us, give us peace, can it be better? “
