According to Professor Lauras Bielinis from Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), in the long run it will be difficult for G. Landsbergis to be a good minister and to keep the helm of his party.
“It just came to our knowledge then. There are various currents within the Conservative Party, and it is necessary to be up to date at all times. Party management is an extraordinary task. If you want to remain the party president, you will have to make a great effort , or to have good deputies who act in his favor and perform functions that he will not be able to carry out as a minister ”, stated L. Bielinis.
At the same time, the political scientist pointed out that G. Landsbergis, as minister, would report directly to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
“A member of the Cabinet of Ministers will have to inform him and implement the joint decisions and instructions of the Prime Minister. Talks with I. Šimonyte are possible. On the other hand, let us understand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) itself is not simple either. It is not easy to make sharp turns there, and probably not even. Subtle action must take place there. Without practice and without institutional ties to this structure, it will not be easy either, “said L. Bielinis.
However, the political scientist does not believe that, although there are some changes in the leadership of the party, they will happen soon.
“If you don’t control the situation, it may become apparent after a year and a half, maybe even later, when the next generation grows up, clear positions will form and emotions will be more pronounced. Now everyone is looking at the situation with some caution, which is normal and correct, and we will see how it will be there, ”said L. Bielinis.
Changed your mind
With the Conservatives winning the election and forming a government, even the former tough critics of Landsberg changed their previous positions. Virgis Valentinavičius worked in Andrius Kubilius’ team, when he was Prime Minister, following the failed actions of the Conservatives in 2016. He has spoken publicly about the need for Mr. Landsberg to step down as President.
Now he doesn’t believe it anymore. According to the associate professor at the University Mykolas Romeris, a young politician will have no difficulty in being a minister and leading a party.
“I don’t see any difficulty in that. Sometimes the party president is also the prime minister. Landsbergis is not the president of any successful party that has won an election. He has enough political capital to fill the position of minister.
And, in terms of party governance, the fact that the party won the elections shows that its party presidency was much more successful than in 2016. election time. This means that the party is under control and it is likely that he can continue to lead the party, ”said V. Valentinavičius.
MRU’s associate professor half-jokingly compensated for the considerations that it is not easy to organize a match when the position often means not being in Lithuania.
“In the conditions of a pandemic, it will be more prevalent in Lithuania than at any other time,” said V. Valentinavičius.
At the same time, the political scientist pointed out that his success as president of the party will also depend on how well the government manages to solve problems together.
“It is always easier to manage a party when problems are resolved, there is popularity, there is no crisis. Difficulties, failures can bring corrections. However, so far there are no arguments that it is necessary to change the party leader at this time, “said V. Valentinavičius.
The political scientist does not believe that Landsberg’s candidacy for foreign ministers can be rejected.
“I think that G. Nausėda should have great weight in rejecting any candidacy from that list, but especially G. Landsbergis. He is the president of the party, who is delegated to hold a position in an important ministry, noted Valentinavičius, who said that blocking such a candidacy could have serious consequences.
G. Landsbergis was elected party president in 2017. The next election of the president of the TS-LKD is scheduled for 2021. at the beginning.
