“It just came to our notice then. We have to react to them and I intend to call a meeting of the State Defense Council soon,” G. Nausėda told reporters on Saturday.
On Friday evening, the president discussed the problems arising on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border with the Interior Minister, Agnė Bilotaitė, and the head of the State Border Guard Service, Rustamas Liubajevs.
“We have algorithms and solutions for how to behave in the case of options A, B and C. I hope that we can solve the situation in the best and most efficient way and do it soon,” said G. Nausėda.
Asta Skaisgirytė, the president’s senior adviser on foreign policy, said on Friday that airspace issues and the Astrava-licensed nuclear power plant in Belarus should also be discussed at the State Defense Council.
According to SBGS, around two hundred five hundred illegal immigrants, mostly Iraqi citizens, have already tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus this year. That’s three times more than in all of 2020.
Interior Minister A. Bilotaitė said on Friday that the intensification of the flow of illegal immigrants from Belarus shows that a hybrid war against Lithuania has started, but the situation is under control. According to the minister, all possible institutions are involved in protecting the border with Belarus.
In late May, Aliaksandr Lukashenko told the Belarusian parliament that Minsk had so far detained “drugs and migrants” at the border with Lithuania, and that it would not do so following the international reaction to the forced landing of a passenger plane and the imposition of new sanctions. “Now you will eat them and catch them yourself,” he said.
