G.Nausėda: It is necessary to significantly increase the supply of vaccines to the EU member states
According to the President of Lithuania, G. Nausėda, the goal of the EU’s herd immunity is a serious commitment to the citizens of the member states and this commitment must be based on real action, the president’s press release states.
“The European Commission proposal to vaccinate 70% of adult EU citizens, thus forming a herd immunity in each of the member states, is ambitious. To achieve this, it is important to ensure the implementation of two main preconditions: accelerate the provision of vaccines and adequate preparation for mass vaccination at the national level, ”said G. Nausėda at the meeting.
The President of Lithuania stressed the need to significantly increase the supply of vaccines to all EU countries. It is also important to ensure transparency and openness in the vaccine supply process. This can be achieved by establishing long-term vaccine distribution programs, with the active participation of the EU institutions throughout the process of vaccine production, purchasing and logistics capacity building. The President also expressed this expectation before the EVS session in an official letter from the leaders of the Baltic States to the Presidents of EVS and the European Commission, Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen.
The Lithuanian leader stressed the importance of efforts to facilitate the availability of the vaccine to neighboring EU countries and advocated for the establishment of a special EU vaccination assistance mechanism for neighboring countries.
During the session, G. Nausėda took the opportunity to address the heads of the EU institutions and the leaders of the member states, condemning the actions of the Russian authorities in arresting and imprisoning the leader of the opposition, Alexei Navalna.
“We need to respond quickly and decisively at the highest level. The actions of the authorities of the Russian Federation do not conform to the principles of human rights and freedoms or democratic values. Such actions must be answered. I proposed to apply the sanctions regime. universal rights of the EU to the representatives of the Russian authorities responsible for the illegal imprisonment of A. Navalnas ”, said G. Nausėda.
