G. Nausėda evaluated the attractiveness of the “peasants” with respect to D. Žalimas: irresponsible push towards the constitutional crisis

On Tuesday, the Union of Peasants and Greens of Lithuania (LVŽS) announced that the coalition partners had addressed President G. Nausėda, drawing the latter’s attention to the fact that the powers of Dainius Žalimas as president of the Tribunal Constitutional could not be extended due to changes in the law of the Constitutional Court.

But the president does not agree.

“In the President’s opinion, each state institution should act responsibly within the limits of their powers. The work of each of them should be aimed at strengthening trust in state institutions, not weakening each other. All institutions should make efforts to guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary Entering a constitutional crisis is an extremely irresponsible step.

Entering a constitutional crisis is an extremely irresponsible step.

If Seimas members have questions about the compliance of the respective laws with the Constitution and how the decisions of the Constitutional Court should be understood, they can take measures to eliminate these doubts, that is, request clarification from the Constitutional Court. The president has no such doubts, “said the president’s spokesman, Antanas Bubnelis, who addressed the appeal of the ruling Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union and his coalition partners.

The rulers take the position that D. Žalimas should have appointed another judge to head the court at the end of his term and raised the question of whether D. Žalimas currently holds the office of president legally.

The declaration of the Coalition’s Board of Governors cites the CC Law that “after the termination of the powers of a judge of the Constitutional Court, the President of this Court (…) a judge of the Constitutional Court appointed by the President of the Court Constitutional will temporarily hold office. “

Mr Žalimas himself called this address signed by the leader of the “peasants” Ramūnas Karbauskis “unauthorized interference in the activities of this court”.

“I consider this to be inadmissible interference in the activities of the Constitutional Court by decisions made by him, specifically by the decision made on Friday,” D. Žalimas told BNS on Tuesday.

The search for deficiencies in the work of D. Žalimas began after the Constitutional Court announced on Friday that a temporary commission of inquiry had been formed headed by “peasant” Agnė Širinskienė, which was investigating the possible impact on decision-makers and the political processes, in violation of the Constitution and its conclusions, were illegal.

As a result, the opposition asked A. Širinskienė to resign as chair of the Seimas Law and Order Committee.
