Parliament passed an amendment to the Education Law this week to allow admission to schools and kindergartens through a centralized information system to submit applications and inform the population.

96 Seimas members voted in favor of said amendment, seven abstained. The amendment was initiated by the conservative Gintarė Skaistė and the head of the “Peasant” Education and Science Committee Eugenijus Jovaiša.

G. Skaistė argues that the electronic system will allow a more efficient planning of the network of educational institutions and will eliminate the possibilities of abuse.

Currently, centralized admission to educational institutions, when applications are registered in online municipalities, is not mandatory, it is carried out in approximately half of the country’s municipalities: nine have a common admission system both in kindergartens like in schools, and another 20 only in kindergartens.
