The French armed forces have assassinated the leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) in Mali.
“On June 3, French forces, with the support of their partners, neutralized Abdelmalek Droukdal and several of his close associates during an operation in northern Mali,” French Defense Minister Florence Parly wrote on Twitter on Friday night. The Defense Ministry, he said, confirms that the terrorist leader is dead.
The group is trying to destabilize North African countries like Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Algeria and Burkina Faso through attacks and kidnappings. The group was founded in 1998 under a different name by A. Droukdalis. He has led the organization to this day. In 2006, the group pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda. He repeatedly kidnapped and killed tourists.
“I congratulate and thank everyone who facilitated and carried out this brave operation, which dealt a harsh blow to this terrorist organization,” wrote the minister. The fight for road and stability in the region is said to be a success.
France participates in the Barkhane anti-terrorist operation in the vast Sahel area with 4,500 soldiers.
