The travel ban will take effect on Sunday to limit the spread of new variants of the coronavirus from abroad.
Speaking after the State Defense Council meeting, J. Castex said he would not yet announce a new general shutdown, adding that “the next few days will be decisive” in deciding on possible new restrictions.
President Emmanuel Macron, for his part, said: “The issue of the closure is legitimate … [bet] we all know the tremendous impact it has on all fronts. “
According to Castex, to limit the spread of the disease, large supermarkets, excluding those that sell food, will be closed as of Sunday and will also be closed at this time from 6 pm maintaining a valid curfew.
“More police and gendarmes will be mobilized to verify curfews, secret parties and illegal restaurant openings,” he said.
The head of government said only essential travel to and from non-EU countries would be allowed. Increasingly, visitors from EU countries other than those working in France but living in neighboring countries will have to present a negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test when crossing the border.
Previously, this requirement applied to those arriving by air and by sea, but now it also applies to those arriving by land.
Schools and shops were still operating in the country, but restaurants and bars were closed, so restrictions in France were slightly lower than in some other neighboring European countries.
But the government said it was aware of growing public fatigue and anxiety over the impending third full shutdown.
