McAfee was charged with tax evasion last year for failing to report income from cryptocurrency advertising while working as a consultant, giving speeches and selling rights to make a documentary about his life story.
Mr. McAfee was detained in Spain, where he had been awaiting extradition to the United States for almost a year.
McAfee was one of the first to develop Internet security software, but authorities in the United States and Belize announced the search for the businessman. The indictment states that Mr. McAfee did not file tax returns in 2014-2018, despite receiving “significant income” from various sources.
The indictment does not establish that the businessman received income during that year or had connections to an antivirus software company named after him, prosecutors said. McAfee evaded taxes by diverting his income to bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts on behalf of others, according to the indictment.
The businessman concealed his property from the Tax Inspectorate, including real estate, a vehicle and a yacht, and wrote it on behalf of others, prosecutors said.
The man was threatened with prison for up to 30 years.
