“Almazbek Atambayev was arrested during a criminal case about the mass unrest in Bishkek,” VNSK officials said.

According to them, Kanat Sagymbayev and Damir Musakeev were also detained during the operation. Both previously served in the presidential guard platoon, and Musakev led it.

Kunduz Zolzubayeva, a spokesman for the Atambayev Social Democratic Party, told the Interfax news agency earlier that special forces arrived at the former president’s residence in the capital’s neighborhood on Saturday afternoon and detained him.

Images of the residence where the special forces are currently working are spreading on social media. The videos also show several buildings with broken windows and a damaged car.

On Friday, Atambayev and his colleagues arrived for a rally in central Bishkek, but aggressive supporters of opposition politician Sadir Zhaparov did not allow the event to take place. Zaparov’s candidacy for the post of prime minister was approved by the country’s parliament earlier this week.

When the former head of state left the scene of the protest, an unknown man fired at his car. On Saturday, information appeared on social networks that the shots were fired by the former president’s guard.

Atambayev was sentenced in June to 11 years in prison for illegally releasing a global criminal authority. The former president has also been sued for a bloody clash last year between his supporters and militias near Atambayev’s residence.

A. Atambayev, imprisoned in the VNSK building, was released by protesters after the disputed parliamentary elections last weekend. Later, the Bishkek court commuted his detention to house arrest.
