The court found the former president guilty of bribing a superior law enforcement officer.

However, Sarkozy is unlikely to go to jail because he will be able to serve his sentence at home using electronic surveillance. The judges also convicted his former attorney Thierry Herzog and attorney Gilbert Azibert. They were also sentenced to three years in prison and two years of probation.

Sarkozy led France from 2007 to 2012. The trial late last year sparked considerable interest in France.

Sarkozy, according to prosecutors, tried in 2014 through Th. Herzog obtained secret investigative material from lawyer G. Azibert. Such behavior poses a threat to the independence of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors argued. Sarkozy denied the accusations against him.

The accusations against the former president are based on recorded conversations with Th. Herzog. The legitimacy of this interception was the subject of much controversy.

Conservative politicians have also come to the forefront of law enforcement due to other scandals. Since mid-March, he will still have to answer in the process for the victims of the illegal electoral campaign. However, Sarkozy also denies the allegations in this case.

Sarkozy is still seen as an icon among his right-wing followers, although he no longer holds any office. Last summer he published a memoir, Le Temps des Tempêtes, which became a best-seller.
