Kaunas “Žalgiris” (4/0) is ready to extend the series of victories in the Euroleague – the Valencia team “Valencia” (2/1) from Spain arrives in Lithuania.
Valencia flies with a lot of rest: the two-week match against Zenit in Saint Petersburg was postponed and in Spain the weekend was also free, so Jaume Ponsarnau was able to prepare for the match against Žalgiris for nine days. Not only that, the Valencian team will be thirsty as they have stumbled in the last few matches and haven’t won since October 8.
There was no luxury to rest Martin Schiller, got two wins in a double week with Žalgiris and defeated Juventus de Utena on the home front over the weekend.
However, on the eve of the game against Valencia, the Žalgiris strategist reviewed the rivals’ play and the general situation in the Euroleague.
“The opponents are a team that defends well that does not allow them to take many penalty kicks. In defense, they stay in front of the player, which allows them to shoot 3-pointers, but without releasing the basket. In attack, on the contrary, they shoot low triples and accumulate many points below the basket, “said the strategist.
– Rival tallers hit well from afar, how important will it be to defend?
– Valencia midfielder Boyan Dubljevic and Mike Tobey are shooting from afar, extending the attack, and it will be very important to stop it. We will not change our rotation as a result.
– Statistically, “Žalgiris” plays one of the slowest basketballs in the Euroleague, are you surprised?
– We weren’t expecting anything about it. At least in the NBA, that number is grossly overstated and teams don’t pay much attention to it. We like to defend aggressively, and in attack we try to play organized, perhaps that is why the tempo is not high. I know that last year Žalgiris’s pace was among the lowest in the Euroleague, but the attack was very effective.
– Where are you trying to improve the most, despite the perfect performance so far?
– We are improving many areas both in attack and defense. We need to further restrict the opponents on our side of the court, improve their braking early in the attack. We are trying to expand the site, collect more triples from the corners, and make more precise feedbacks.
– What do you think of the rivals’ complaints about the advantage of “Žalgiris” when he plays with the fans?
– Sorry, but I have no comment. This is a very elusive topic. On the one hand, this is a significant advantage, but we live in times of pandemic and the situation is different in different countries, and it would be cruel to let fans visit them.
– Is Patricio Garino looking for change?
– Our management is constantly looking at the market with one eye, because it cannot know that there will be injuries or other unforeseen situations. We always monitor the market, but that does not mean that there will be purchases.
