The government requires that a migrant be fed for less than 6 euros a day. According to the municipalities, the price is actually up to three times higher. We also have to adapt to the tastes of immigrants: not everyone likes Lithuanian food, reports LNK.
“Currently there are 50 illegal immigrants living in the Lazdijai district, Kapčiamiestis, in the same place as the former orphanage,” Mayor Ausma Miškinienė said.
July 22, a meeting was held with the Minister of Finance to discuss the key issue of reimbursement.
According to A. Miškinienė, the main expenses are for the feeding of illegal immigrants: “The total amount spent, that is, almost 30 thousand. EUR from July 2, including the cost of adequacy of the facilities, utilities, everything necessary to put into operation the sewage, water and other needs. Currently, the main costs are meals, which amount to € 14 per day and include transport, tools, disposable tableware and the food ration itself. The food is transported hot, three times a day, 60 kilometers to one side of the dining room where the food is prepared ”.
Mayors have received complaints from the government that food is too expensive for migrants to buy. The government requires that a migrant be fed for less than 6 euros.
“The diet we have to eat is given to us, we don’t have much room to vary and currently in the Lazdijai district, when conducting surveys, those who want to eat do not really appear for food. As a result, those 14 euros with transport, dishes, food three times a day is the lowest price we could buy. We will buy again in the near future when the current contract expires. If we can buy cheaper, we will be very happy, ”explained A. Miškinienė.
“It is hot food that is cooked three times a day. The main ingredients, the main dishes that illegal immigrants eat, are poultry, pasta, fermented cheeses, dairy, ”added the mayor.
We need help, because we don’t really have a separate reserve, we incur costs, we cover part of the costs here and now from the small reserves that we have.
According to A. Miškinienė, this financial burden for the municipality is already difficult to bear: that is why the meeting, the approval, the guarantee for the reimbursement of certain expenses, which has been in doubt, are really important and significant for the municipalities ”.
“So far, we have heard that all expenses incurred by municipalities will, of course, be covered within reason, as mentioned by the Minister of Finance. This is the cost incurred as of July 2. to 12, for which a more detailed list of expenses was approved. And all other expenses related to the needs as well as the adequacy of the premises will be reimbursed. Of course, it will be necessary to attach supporting documents. We will definitely add them, we are open and we strive to make the work as constructive as possible, as soon as possible and to cover the costs ”, said the mayor.
According to her, the municipality could support the migrants with its own funds for just another two weeks: “We believe that within two weeks decisions will be made at the government level and the funds promised by the state will arrive. We are really willing to wait two more weeks. “
The Lazdijai district, according to the mayor, also faced other challenges related to nutrition: real identified taste needs and the situation is currently improving. It should also be noted that the Food Bank is also contributing, yesterday an important part of the support came to the Lazdijai district with an important part of food, fruits and other categories that are not in the catering ”.
The menu also had to adjust for the tastes of the migrants: “Our goal is to spend as little as possible and that what we spend is consumed,” he said.
