Following the scandals in the country, the Veterinary Service and the ad portal will only allow ads from identified breeders.

According to the SFVS, it has been agreed with the representatives of Skelbiu.lt that from now on, animal breeders, animal caretakers or other people who trade animals will be obliged to indicate in the advertisements the registration number or veterinary authorization provided by the service.

These required data entry fields will have active links to publicly available SFVS data and the Pet Registry to prevent abuse.

Those wishing to sell or donate dogs, cats, ferrets and other keepers will also need to provide the identification number of the animal or its mother, if the puppy is not marked, i.e. the microchip. Additionally, additional data about the animal’s rabies vaccination, country of origin, and location will need to be entered when uploading the ad.

Advertising portals have every opportunity to help curb the illegal trade in animals and illegal farming and are largely responsible for solving the situation as soon as possible through joint efforts. Today, it is very important that the agreement with the management of “Skelbiu.lt” has been reached quickly and our request has been answered in good faith “, says Darius Remeika, Director of SFVS.

According to him, the agreement reached more information for those seeking to acquire animals, preventing the sale of illegally raised animals through one of the largest advertising portals in the country.

“With a similar request, we wrote to the administrations of other popular advertising sites in Lithuania,” said D. Remeika.

Following public outrage at the alleged illegal animal kennels and poor housing conditions, SFVS and police officers launched several investigations into violations of animal housing conditions in various parts of Lithuania since the weekend.

At least five studies are underway on animal cruelty. Dead and crippled animals were found in illegal kennels, and around a hundred animals were transferred to care organizations.
