“It is common practice to collect information before each visit abroad,” Raminta Stanaitytė-Česnulienė, the president’s senior adviser, told reporters on Tuesday.
He also added that Nausėda “did not hear how people speak in Stockholm.”
The portal lrytas.lt and the newspaper Lietuvos Rytas circulated part of the correspondence between the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which the Advisor to the President Sigitas Mitkus asked the Ministry to send “more thesis on the Istanbul / LGBT Convention / Association ”.
The ministry, for its part, said that the presidency should contact the Ministry of Social Welfare and Labor in this regard, but later assured that it will do so itself, but more time will be lost.
The president’s main adviser, Povilas Mačiulis, also said that in preparing the trip, the head of state “cooperates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and exchanges information,” but stressed that “it is not normal” for such correspondence to be made public.
“It is not normal for correspondence to appear in various publications and get published,” said P. Mačiulis.
It was also unable to answer whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent the response to the Presidency, since this was not its area of responsibility. P. Mačiulis heads the Internal Policy Group.
Mr Nausėda is leaving for Sweden on Tuesday. During the visit, the President will meet with King Charles XVI Gustav of Sweden, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and Riksdag President Andreas Norlen.
During meetings with Swedish leaders, the president will discuss the possibilities of further strengthening the Lithuanian-Swedish bilateral relations, the security issues of the European Union and the region, the situation in Belarus, the EU Eastern Partnership initiative, the protection of the eastern borders of the EU. and management of illegal migratory flows, security of the Astrava nuclear power plant.
The leaders will also discuss cooperation in the fields of economics, culture and science, marking the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 30th anniversary of the reestablishment.
