In considering this issue, the Minister of Transport and Communications Jaroslav Narkevičius emphasized that the Ministry’s position of principle does not change: it is against such an amendment to the law.
As the Minister commented, it will not be possible to guarantee the safety of people crossing pedestrian crossings, nor to provide cyclists with caution when crossing crossings and not driving directly in front of cars.
However, in response to his words, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis made arguments. He emphasized that the drafters of the amendment to the Road Safety Law have provided a number of guarantees to ensure that cyclists behave safely on the roads.
For example, according to S. Skvernelis, the bill states that cyclists must ensure that the path is safe to cross when preparing to enter unregulated crosswalks, as well as ensure the safety of pedestrians.
The proposal to amend the current Road Safety Law was also approved by the Ministers of the Environment and National Defense.
The vote decided to approve this amendment to the law. The final decision will be made by Seimas.
