Fertility Clinic Investigation: Arrested CFO A.Usonis Pleaded Guilty

On Thursday, Klaipeda District Attorneys and Klaipeda County Police Chief Commissariat officials announced a full-scale investigation. Nine suspects were arrested, with a total of thirteen suspects.

According to the prosecutor, A. Usonis has been accused of fraudulent organization of accounting and registration and presentation of incorrect data to the State Tax Inspectorate.

Non-custodial pre-trial detention measures are also available to almost all of the other 12 suspects, some of whom have already been released from detention centers and the rest will be released in the near future. Some people are also prohibited from communicating with each other.

According to a press conference at the Klaipeda Regional Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, it is suspected that part of the proceeds may not have been accounted for. It is estimated that the amount could be around one million euros. During the search, around half a million euros in cash were found.

Matilda Liatukaitė, a lawyer representing the company’s detained CFO, said in the same post that she was unable to comment on the data from the pre-trial investigation and did not yet know whether the decision on the stricter detention measure would be appealed.

The lawyer also stressed that she had faced severe disrespect from officials and violations of the Criminal Procedure Code (CCP).

“During my 14 years as a lawyer, I have for the first time encountered such disrespect for lawyers from pretrial investigative officers, such chaos and a series of CCP violations, for which we and my colleague we have filed a very extensive complaint, both reporting to the Bar Association, the Attorney General and the Commissioner General and other institutions, ”said M. Liatukaitė.

The Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced on Thursday that the Vaisūros klinika company, which operates in Lithuania’s three largest cities, may not have generated around one million euros in revenue.

According to the prosecution, after about fifty searches, half a million euros in cash were found and nine people were arrested, including executives.

According to data from the Registry Center, the shareholders of the Fertility Clinic are Algė Ivaškevičė, Virginijus Diržauskas, Algirdas Usonis and Dov Feldberg.

This clinic advertises on its website that it is the largest infertility treatment institution in Lithuania, offering the largest number of assisted reproductive procedures in the country. The clinic, which has been in operation since 2000, has branches in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. It is directed by A. Usonis.

The pre-trial investigation is led and organized by the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office, led by officials of the Economic Crimes Investigation Board of the Criminal Police, together with the Office of Criminal Police, Kaunas County Police Economic Crimes Investigation Board, State Tax Inspection and Financial Crimes Investigation Service.
