“When she was born and we found out she would have that disability, it really wasn’t that difficult to accept.” Maybe it is easier when a child is like this from birth, when you know that it is and you are not going to change anything, you can just do something forward and help him.
And here, when thunder falls from the clear sky, you just don’t expect it. It seems that life was not easy for Medutė anyway, it was really unexpected that such a blow would happen again … ”says Gintarė.
The girl’s condition suddenly deteriorated.
“In those five years, she has already made a lot of progress. She began to lean on her legs, then, by lifting her legs to walk, her armpits support her, and finally, she began to sit alone without special chairs, support, only herself.
That balance and coordination has greatly improved. We continue forward in such stages. Our results were not very fast, but they were consistent and safe, “remembers Medutė’s mother.
In March, the girl returned from rehab in Slovakia. The family spent two weeks in mandatory quarantine, spending time at home. At the end of that time, they gradually began to go out into the field. When Medute had a slight fever, the family was alarmed, but noted his condition and expected nothing wrong.
“A week before that day, she had several parts of the temperature, but was not high. This is sometimes the case with children, I thought maybe it was blowing outside, maybe some kind of fatigue or something else.
We saw if someone came here or not. But after a few days the temperature dropped. His behavior and emotions: everything was fine, we wouldn’t even have thought about it, because there was not much to pay attention to so that something really manifested itself, “recalls Gintarė.
She says that about a week after the temperature rose slightly, on April 5, Medutė’s behavior suddenly changed:
“It just came to our attention then. When she came back, she got so restless, irritable. I sat her on her knees and she clung to me a lot, grabbed her, looked really uncomfortable or something hurt because she was bothering her so much.
We were still trying to give dinner, but she didn’t even want to eat anymore. That man still said: maybe she is just tired here, she wants to sleep, let’s put her to sleep. It was I who laid her on her side, it seemed like she was trying to fall asleep, but then she felt overwhelmed. When I was exhausted, I saw that she was as if she had lost consciousness, she was completely limp, disoriented. That’s why I started crying from that stress, screaming that the boy was already dying … I can’t even say how I felt … “, Gintarė doesn’t stop his tears.
Half of the brain was swollen.
Without waiting for anything, he called an ambulance. While waiting for it to come, Medutė felt overwhelmed again and practically no longer reacted to the environment. Doctors took her to Klaipeda Children’s Hospital, resuscitation department. The mother could not stay there overnight, so she could not bear the night and got up in the morning, seeing her daughter in a very difficult condition.
“When I left in the morning, she was practically in a coma, the temperature did not drop, remained above 39 degrees. Honey allowed all kinds of drugs, tried to lower the temperature, but failed somehow. At first it was thought that it was related to temperature and that there would be nothing worse. Then, the doctors thought that it was necessary to take the cerebrospinal fluid to see if it showed any inflammation there, “says Gintarė.
Fortunately, Dr. Luknė Taurasevičė prescribed a medication for inflammation of the brain and antibiotics before taking the liquid. The quick reaction helped avoid an even worse scenario: the virus could “eat” Medutė’s entire brain.
A recent CT scan showed that half of the girl’s brain was swollen. She was transported from Klaipeda to Kaunas, where she spent several more days in resuscitation. So Gintarė moved her daughter to Kaunas.
“I knew I would not be allowed resuscitation due to quarantine, so I rented an apartment. I really have no complaints about the doctors who did not allow me to resuscitate. Of course, it was very difficult, but at least I wanted to be in Kaunas, I went out to walk to the hospital to be at least as close to her, ”says Medutė’s mother.
Medutė life moments
The involuntary movements of Meduta’s hand began
She says that on April 14, during Amber’s birthday, her daughter was transferred from the intensive care unit to the children’s room. Mom could already be there with the little fighter.
“When he woke up from the resuscitation, at first he seemed better than he is now. So it seemed like we would only need to get the leg and arm back somehow because the left side was paralyzed. I massaged it, I exercised it, the clinics also appointed a physical therapist, it seemed that there would be such great problems and that it would be necessary to move that arm and leg in some way, “shares the woman.
But Amber’s initial hopes were shattered. The jellyfish started moving the leg, but is now caused by an involuntary moving hand:
“The hyperkinesis and involuntary movements began in her. She shook his hand, which was distracting her, narrowing her eyes. She is as paralyzed as she is, but she also moves involuntarily. It is very difficult to know, but that movement bothers her a lot.
Now we attend classes, we go to physical therapy and to a psychologist, a speech therapist, but it is difficult for her to do several functional things: drink, put in a bucket ”.
Furthermore, Medutė’s sleep was disturbed due to the movement of the hand. You cannot rest normally because you simply cannot fall asleep.
“It just came to our attention then. At noon, she no longer sleeps completely, although she is tired after school, she would like to sleep, but that hand moves and does not allow her to fall asleep. At night she does not sleep without medication either …
It is very difficult now. Seeing her like this … I don’t know, I can’t even tell. Her perception remained the same as before the illness, but those movements hampered her. It is very difficult to see such a distracted child … “says Gintarė, writing his words with difficulty.
She also talks openly about seemingly lowering her expectations. At first, the woman longed with all her heart for the girl to return to the state she had already reached due to her constant work, but now the most important desire is completely different.
“I really wanted him to recover, to be just like before: to stand up, sit down, try to walk again, but now that the child is distracted, he can’t even fall asleep normally, all those desires are changing. Now I just want him to stop being distracted, start sleeping, rest so that she feels normal, “complains Medutė’s mother.
Everyone can contribute to the recovery of Medutė
Medutė is now undergoing rehabilitation in Kaunas, and her mother is not withdrawing one step. There are still five weeks to go, and doctors and mothers with similar experiences say Amber says it only takes time:
“Everyone we talk to says it takes time, patience. In half a year or a year, he will see how things will continue, what awaits him in the future. “
She doesn’t hide the fact that everyone comforts her that children recover faster after such things, but those words don’t reassure Gintar too much.
“I understand that she was not healthy anyway. Healthy babies can exit without major consequences or recover faster, but Meda was not healthy anyway, she had a genetic mutation, other disorders that made it difficult for her to do what we all think she is. normal.
I would really like that better option, but I do not rule out that it is not like that … But now it is not even that important. Now it is important for her to be able to rest and feel better. I know it will be much more difficult, but I don’t lose hope, “says Gintarė.
She shares that she endures the difficult tests of life with her husband Tom, who always finds the words he needs, relieves, comforts and supports. Elder, an older sister, is also waiting for her at Medutė’s home in Priekule, who is now communicating with her sister via long distance calls and trying to elevate her mood in every way.
You can also contribute to the creation of the Medutė miracle. Since 2017, the family has established a support fund with the goal of giving Medute the opportunity to attend private classes in physiotherapy, swimming pool, osteopathic procedures and to purchase the necessary equipment.
1.2% can also be assigned to Medute. personal income tax by filling out grant form FRO512.
