Sigitas Kavaliauskas will return to work as Kaunas “Žalgiris” fitness coach, and one of the assistants to new head coach Martin Schiller will be Tautvydas Sabonis, sources from BasketNews.lt publish.
Shortly after celebrating her 37th birthday, Kavaliauskas will return to Žalgiris in seven years. He held a similar position in 2007-2013, and was later replaced by Justin Grainys.
This summer, when Grainius, along with Šarūnas Jasikevičius, Darius Maskoliūnas and Tomas Masiulis, moved to the Barcelona team, Kavaliauskas was the top candidate to take on the position of fitness training coach and accepted this offer.
He returns to Kaunas after a career in China, where he has worked for the past three years. Kavaliauskas is also a long-term fitness coach for the Lithuanian national team, who worked there until 2016.
“Žalgiris” will continue to have two fitness coaches: Nerijus Navickas will continue to work in this position.
Tautvydas Sabonis, who started his coaching career last year, worked on Žalgiris’ backup team and was promoted to the main team this summer. It will be responsible for the individual development of the players.
There will be an additional 1-2 assistants in Schiller’s coaching staff.
