From the beginning of the session, those who respected the opposition and wanted to appear could ruin their image at the beginning of the first session of the spring session, and the former prime minister raised the idea that vaccines against the coronavirus should be given to parliamentarians elected of the nation.
Although much discussion and controversy arose about the remote work of the Seimas, the parliamentary leadership decided that, despite the threat of infection, at least the first session of the spring session should be convened live.
“The first day, the start of the session, the anthem and a relatively short day of the meeting,” said Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, the eldest of the conservative faction.
“Next week we have planned to work remotely,” says Seimas spokesperson Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen.
But Saulius Skvernelis, who has already received the Pfizer vaccine due to his cancer disease, would like to continue talking to his colleagues live, rather than on a computer screen.
“Maybe it still makes sense that the members of the Seimas who want to be vaccinated, as well as the members of the Government, and we could work here without any fear in the way all parliaments work,” says Saulius Skvernelis, a member of the Peasant Faction.
“We must look at that big picture and not be in a rush to overtake those who need more vaccination now,” said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
“Already in the spring, we will talk about a growing circle of vaccinated people, whether the members of the Seimas should have an additional priority in that circle or not, we will be able to discuss it,” says Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
But the Seimas Spokesperson consoles that in this session the opposition and without vaccines will be better.
“There will definitely be more discussions in the Seimas, there will be more opportunities for the opposition to express this, I think these are the highlights of this session,” says V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
With the attention of the opposition, the rulers decided to introduce a new tradition: allowing the first session of the session to put all their groups on the agenda one by one. However, the conservative Mykolas Majauskas soon explained its essence.
“Those suggestions are on the agenda as a courtesy gesture discussions with opposition groups. This does not mean that they will be discussed in commissions, nor does it mean that they will be adopted, ”says Mykolas Maujauskas, a member of the conservative faction.
“Now, a colleague of his ruling majority has just treated the opposition like garbage. And that is the eve of March 11. What does the colleague say? You don’t even think and you don’t think that we will consider, vote and discuss your projects in committees ”Said Remigijus Žemaitaitis, a member of the Mixed Group.
Members of the Seimas were quick to show their former colleague that he was returning to parliament with preliminary respect. Skardžius, as an unelected member of the Seimas, received compensation of almost 12 thousand euros. But for the year of the Antanas Guoga mandate, Skardžius can enjoy and thousands of taxpayers and again received a parliamentary seat with a solid salary. Skardžius, who sincerely dislikes conservatives, will have a chance to appear again this spring, as the rulers are already saying they will address many issues that are causing public debate.
“We would like to see this spring in the Seimas as a source of human rights. Present and adopt a project of association, continue the project of decriminalization of small amounts of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as pay attention to the language of hate,” says the Elder of the Freedom Faction Ieva Pakarklytė.
It is also planned to introduce bans on the trade and advertising of alcohol.
“The greatest emphasis is on those illogical prohibitions where, in fact, they do not determine the quantities of consumption,” says R. Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė.
In almost 4 months, the parliament must consider almost 473 bills. The opposition says the pace is slow, but those in power are retaliating by saying less is better than better.
“I have never seen such an illiterate government. In 30 years, it will only be able to present 118 projects in the spring work program, 68 of the 118 projects are unregistered, 50 are registered, of which 50 – 22 are from the previous government and 34 are registered with the European Union, legislation and its requirements and directives ”, says R. Samogitian.
The head of parliament says the pandemic must be addressed first and only then should reforms be undertaken.
“After difficulties and trials, our nation always finds the strength to rise up. We will do it again. I have no doubt. But that requires at least two things: listening and benevolence. And it is still increasingly difficult for me to ask for patience,” he said. V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
And in his congratulatory letter to the Seimas, President Gitanas Nausėda calls for fundamental changes to be made right now, without feeling the pressure of the upcoming elections.
