evaluated what this means for the future

According to the political scientist, the unanimous vote of the members of the faction or of the political discipline is an old problem in the Lithuanian Parliament, but L. Gudžinskas does not paint a bright future for the Union of Greens and Peasants of Lithuania (LVŽS), which is governed by the “iron fist”.

A serious discussion awaits you

“Tensions are being felt, these days up to 10 people have left for this Association Law, disappointed (according to the Social Democrats – aut. past.) – I’m really sorry about that. However, this does not create grounds to speak of disintegration, collapse or the like, “said L. Gudžinskas.

The association bill was not supported by 5 of the 11 members of the Social Democratic faction present at the meeting: Tomas Bičiūnas, Kęstutis Vilkauskas, Vilija Targamadzė, Liudas Jonaitis and Vidmantas Kanopa.

According to the political scientist, any vote in which part of the party members do not comply with the provisions of the program goes beyond the party’s statute.

“It is an important factor that cannot be ignored or forgotten.” I am convinced that during all this time we will have a fairly serious discussion within the party on how to ensure that the party representatives in the Seimas take a coherent position, “he said.

The political scientist considered that this vote in the Seimas does not identify an ideological section within the party, but rather a different perception of the members of the faction on this particular problem, as well as the interests of individual single-member members.

“It is normal that opinions and points of view differ, the party is great. However, what is written in the Statute is important: if your attitudes as a party representative do not coincide with the program, you should not prevent other representatives implement the program.

The appropriate behavior would have been not to participate in the vote, not to vote “against” and to block this bill at the presentation stage, ”noted L. Gudžinskas.

At the same time, L. Gudžinskas stated that he was not sure that the improved association bill would return to the Seimas. I support the LSDP faction. According to him, not all Liberals voted for the bill presented by his party chairman, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen.

“My expectation, with respect to the Socialist Group, is that there will be ‘no’ people and more than half will vote in favor,” said the socialist.

The political scientist points out that political discipline in the Lithuanian Parliament has been a problem since 1990: the vote of the members of the faction shows the strength and internal consolidation of the parties. “Any controversial law is a challenge, but also an opportunity to strengthen discipline,” commented L. Gudžinskas.

See the beginning of the end

According to the latest public poll, support for LSDP increased 3.4 percent in the month. – from 6.8 percent. March, up 10.2 percent. In May. Political scientists associate this with the election of Vilija Blinkevičiūtė as party leader.

L. Gudžinskas agrees with this version: “Lithuanian parties are characterized by presidentialization, when people evaluate parties according to their leaders, according to their leaders. Ingrida Šimonytė, Saulius Skvernelis also appeared actively and successfully in the presidential elections, and as non-partisans they were appointed to the first (party electoral lists – aut. past.), the parties were behind them ”, says the political scientist.

According to the Social Democrat, in the last elections, the Lithuanian Union of Greens and Peasants (LVŽS) seized part of the former Social Democratic voters. According to L. Gudžinskas, LVŽS is a serious competitor for the Social Democrats, but at the same time the political scientist raises questions about the future of the peasant party.

“This is a serious competitor, on the other hand, we see that this match is controlled by an iron fist – it is basically Ramūnas Karbauskis UAB. I see some internal fragmentation of them, perhaps we are already seeing the beginning of the end. Because the shadow government they formed has neither Saul Skvernelis nor any of his followers. I think we have to wait, there may be interesting processes here, ”predicted L. Gudžinskas.

“It just came to our notice then. If he continues to travel like this, given the unpopularity of R. Karbauskis, I think support for them may fluctuate,” he added.

At the same time, the Social Democrat says that the faction should not join the coalition agreement signed by LVŽS and the Labor Party.

“We see that only the peasant and worker ‘correspondents’ have already started to get angry. I agree with V. Blinkevičiūtė, who says that formal agreements don’t really mean much. We need to look at specific law enforcement initiatives, ”said the political scientist.
