London in the process of drafting a bill that could reject a difficult compromise to negotiate on the UK-owned Irish border with Northern Ireland, Cap. Michel wrote this on Twitter after a phone conversation with Irish Prime Minister Michal Martin.
“It is time for the UK government to live up to its responsibilities. The international credibility of the UK firm is based on the card,” wrote Ch. Michelis.
“The withdrawal treaty must be fully implemented, peace and stability in Ireland must be ensured and the integrity of the single market must be preserved,” he added.
The UK government unveiled proposed new legislation on Wednesday to rewrite the Brexito deal, a bill of great concern in Brussels, as did former UK prime ministers and MPs under current Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Under the UK’s withdrawal treaty from the EU, Northern Ireland will have a special status to ensure that the “hard” border between the territory and EU-owned Ireland is not reestablished. The absence of such a border is foreseen in the 1998 peace treaty, which ended three decades of bloodshed.
But Johnson on Saturday accused the EU of threatening to dismantle the UK by imposing a food “blockade” between Britain and Northern Ireland.
EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said on Sunday that the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland “does not threaten the integrity of the UK.”
“We have reconciled this fragile commitment with Mr Johnson and the UK government to preserve peace and stability on the island of Ireland,” he wrote on Twitter.
