The leaders of the 27 countries held a video conference to discuss the coronavirus pandemic, but the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said they also discussed the dispute in the Mediterranean.
Turkey has deployed its research vessel to search for gas in the waters claimed by Greece, a move that has sparked a fierce war of words with European leaders and forced the Community to raise the issue of possible sanctions.
NATO has established a hotline to help Greek and Turkish troops avoid accidental clashes, and Germany is leading the diplomatic effort.
However, with strong French support, Greece and Cyprus are calling for tougher action. EU leaders must return to this issue at the next summit.
“We express our determination to be respected and agree to work in two ways: positive and less positive,” said Ch. Michelis.
“We have proposed a clear way to pursue a positive agenda with Turkey. Until now, Turkey has not chosen this path,” he added.
“We condemn the recent unilateral actions in the eastern Mediterranean, the provocations and the rhetoric that are completely unacceptable,” he warned. Michelis.
“In December, we will have the opportunity to return to this issue,” he said of the next scheduled EU summit, in which 27 member states could decide to take action.
