The Estonian team (2/2) achieved an extremely dramatic victory in the European Championship selection group B, which in Perm 105: 101 (20:21, 34:23, 28:22, 12:28, 11: 7) broke the Italian team (5/1) after extra time.
Now Estonians can enter the main tournament even after losing the remaining matches, if only North Macedonia has not won 2 games in the remaining 3 matches.
The Estonians controlled the match from the second half, and by the middle of the third quarter they had a 22-point lead – 68:46. The Italians struggled in the last 10 minutes when they won the section 11: 0 and returned the intrigue – 83:89.
2 minutes and 14 seconds left. the Estonians had an 8-point lead (94:86), but Italy missed a point in their basket and came close at 92:94. Not only that, Italy had up to 21 seconds to make a decisive attack, but it didn’t take all the time: Marco Spissu tied the result in a raid: 94:94. Estonia had 10 seconds left, but Maiko-Kalev Kotsar’s throw-in, which could have snatched the victory, flew over the country.
The intransigent continued into overtime, where both teams led. There was a minute and a half left, the Italians were slightly ahead (98:97), but the Estonians took the penalties, and after several defensive attacks they charged the ball from above – 101: 98. Italy tried to save a long shot, but lost and 13 seconds to go. the victory was secured by Sten Sokk, who took a free kick.
