Details of the incident are being clarified by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
As Mr. Reinsalu said, the deceased obtained Estonian citizenship in 2016 by naturalization.
“He came to Estonia in 2006 as a fellow under the project and had refugee status,” said the minister. According to U. Reinsalu, the man applied for citizenship, which he received, and therefore renounced Belarusian citizenship.
According to the head of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian government is still clarifying the status and role of the country’s citizen in military operations in Donbass.
“Estonia has the principle that Estonian citizens can serve in military units in other countries if they have a government permit,” the minister said, adding that, to his knowledge, no such permit had been issued at this time.
According to the information received, Ukraine has not yet officially confirmed that the Estonian citizen was killed in the war.
On Wednesday, the Postimees newspaper reported that Belarus-born Estonian citizen Nikolai Ilyin died Monday in the war in Donbas.
