It is announced that the EP will not recognize Aliaksandr Lukashenko as President of Belarus after the end of his current term on 5 November.
MEPs welcome the recently established Coordination Council as a “temporary representation of people in need of democratic change in Belarus”, open to all interested parties. MEPs continue to call for new, free and fair elections in Belarus as soon as possible, under the auspices of international organizations.
The European Parliament “strongly supports the EU sanctions against those responsible for the falsification of elections and the repression in Belarus, including Aliaksandr Lukashenko; calls on the Council, in close cooperation with international partners, to apply without delay comprehensive and effective sanctions against all perpetrators of electoral fraud, violence and repression in Belarus, “he said.
The European Parliament asked the “Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative and the Council to examine the possibility of including Russian citizens directly involved in supporting the Lukashenko regime in Belarus”.
This resolution is advisory in nature and the EU institutions and Member States are not legally obliged to implement it.
