Edmundas Greimas, executive director of the Nature Foundation, is convinced that any inappropriate stain or odor in the Curonian Lagoon will raise suspicions among naturalists and residents of Kintai.

“If it happens that the project will be implemented, society will be very demanding: every corner of the Curonian lagoon, whether it is oil or not, every smell, smoke, in the end you can see the noisy traffic flowing through The settlement of Kintai many times complaints have been written to environmental institutions, ”said E. Greimas at a press conference in the Seimas on Tuesday.

According to him, Minijos Nafta wants to settle near the settlement and in an area very sensitive to nature.

According to him, despite the guarantees of “Minijos nafta” that all sources of pollution will be isolated in several layers, it will never be possible to insure against accidents and other problems.

“In the event of a major or minor accident, we are likely to face a violation of the Natura 2000 site, and the establishment and maintenance of Natura 2000 and the protection regime is not only our national concern but also that of the EU, which gives naturalists and the public the right to complain. “If it is really polluting, its occurrence, procedures for the EU environmental authorities,” warned E. Greim.

At the time, Andrius Varnas, a member of the Kintai community, says that the Kintians were never strictly against oil drilling, but suggested that the company drill a few miles offshore, where construction would not bother people and transportation would not pass.

“Of course, the roads must be repaired, the well must be bent, long. It costs money,” said A. Varnas.

Antanas Kližentis, an elder from Kintai, calls on Minijos Nafta’s intentions to obtain a permit to extract oil in Kintai without an aggressive and tender trade policy.

“Until now, Minijos Nafta does not even have a permit to develop oil production outside the authorized area,” explained A. Kližentis.

He stressed that the general plan of the Šilutė district envisages the shore of the Curonian lagoon in Kintas as a recreational area, and no other economic activities, such as oil extraction, are envisaged.

According to him, oil extraction is planned in the water protection zone, where this activity is already prohibited by law.

“The planned area is swampy, and during floods and floods it is often flooded, having communication systems with the Curonian lagoon, so the waste generated during oil production will affect the protected values of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park, the Curonian Lagoon Biosphere Reserve and the recreational resources we have created. ” A. Kližentis.

Zigmantas Balčytis, director of the Seimas Audit Committee and a former MEP, predicts that the company’s ambitions may negatively impact nature and change the environment, as planned oil extraction sites are close to protected areas.

According to him, Kintai residents and tourists will lose a healthy environment, which will affect the country’s development strategy.

“Because the pollutants will be released into the air during oil extraction,” said Z. Balčytis.

Minijos Nafta has been applying for a permit to extract oil in Kintai without a tender since 2003. The latest application was sent to the Lithuanian Geological Survey a year ago.

The company claims that it currently uses eight oil fields in Klaipėda and Šilutė districts: Vilkyčiai, Šiupariai, South Šiupariai, Diegliai, Pociai, Sakučiai, Kiškiai and Agluonėnai, where there are 31 wells for various purposes, but the oil is extracted from 15 wells. . .

The Minijos Nafta shares are owned by Lotos Geonafta, a subsidiary of the Polish oil company Lotos Petrobaltic SA, and the Danish company Odin Energi.
