“I like all the holidays: Mardi Gras, Christmas and Easter. I love crafts and something I create for each holiday. We celebrate the holidays with a working year, and our whole family is waiting for them.” 15min TO LIFE Edita said.
Edita’s family includes her husband, their two children, and Edita’s 94-year-old grandmother. From the mother, the woman learned not only many things, but also attitudes towards traditions and customs.
And Easter is a special holiday. Mainly because nature is being reborn. Edita starts preparing for this spring break about a week ago and lays her eggs together with her family. Mostly wax, and since last year Edita has been shaving them off.

Shaved eggs dominoes
“I’ve been waxing eggs for about 16 years and I just started shaving last year. I collect all the information about wax printing, patterns, I look at the works of other masters.
Last year I bought Odeta Tumėnaitė-Bražėnienė’s book on printing eggs in Aukštaitija. And there, the shaved eggs caught my eye. They were interested in me in the past, but I tried a bit, they didn’t come out. Meanwhile, more free time emerged last year with the onset of the quarantine. The stubbornness was enough. I tried, I succeeded ”, said the interlocutor.
Why is this approach so complicated and beyond everything? Because, Edita says, sometimes people don’t find the right tool.
“Not everything can work with a simple knife or other sharp object. I accidentally discovered a small thread-cutting tool on a sewing machine. He did very well after his death. Therefore, for shaving, it is also important to adjust the tool. ”Said E.Prikockienė.

The motifs Edita chooses for the egg stamping are very diverse. These are the invented details, nature, various forms.
“When I print wax, there are birds. I remember the children liked them a lot,” Edita said. It is also very important that the eggs also contain symbols of life and nature’s awakening: “Like a wish in each egg.”
Allowance for full and hollow eggs
Radviliškis begins preparing for Easter a week in advance. It is not just about egg stamping, but also about household chores and decorating. The family traditionally eats Easter breakfast, if possible: go to church, meet relatives, roll eggs.
Before Easter, Edita wets about 20-30 eggs and about 20 more empty shells. Before that, the contents of the egg are blown by making small holes and the shell is dried. These hollow eggs are usually intended for exhibitions.
After Easter, there are 4-5 eggs left in Edita’s basket.
Before getting ready to print, Edita divides the egg into two or four parts: she draws lines that make it easier to track the symmetry: That’s why the eggs are different.
By the way, most of the eggs and the most beautiful fried eggs are distributed by women: to acquaintances, friends, neighbors. So after Easter, there are 4-5 eggs left in Edita’s basket.

In seconds and the wax dries
It takes about two hours to hatch an egg. As Edita says, this job requires patience.
“It just came to our attention then. While we watched TV, we communicated as a family, we shaved them. My oldest son, who is 20 years old, also tried. And he succeeded!
And here the seven-year-old prefers to print in wax. The difference is that I want silence and peace when printing with wax. Everyone, sitting at his egg, concentrates and looks at each drop. After all, it takes seconds for the wax to dry. When printing with wax, you don’t want anything to stop me from being tired. It’s like meditation, relaxation ”, said the interlocutor.
During the day, Edita lays between 6 and 7 eggs; more, he says, I can’t guess.

You should start with the points
According to the interlocutor, if you have never tried printing with wax, but it would be interesting to try, you should start with simple elements.
“For an unqualified person, I would say that, first of all, one must learn to put equal points, keep the line. To make it easier, I would advise marking the egg with a pencil. In this way, the pattern will be smoother ”, advised E.Prikockienė.
And if you fail, there is nothing terrible about it either. After all, even the hands of a skilled printer cannot accurately soak an egg.
“It just came to our knowledge then. But this is not a factory, but a work of art. They must be different. When I print eggs, I do not avoid different colors, and sometimes it is very fun to print them with onion peels and herbs,” said the interlocutor.
Surprising families who don’t celebrate Easter
What is Edita’s opinion about the stickers sold in stores? Sometimes, Edita says, she also buys them herself, but of course the eggs in the family home have their own right. Because it is not only preparation for Easter, but also creation.
“Sometimes our grandmother says: after all, they are just eggs, we are so marginal all the time, nothing new. I think: now what? After all, a lot of shopping stickers, paint. Of course, there is less time, so moms don’t get involved in that. So I’m glad people are celebrating Easter in at least that way.
I am more surprised by Lithuanian families who say they don’t paint eggs. I think children need to see, feel our traditional festivals. Yes, they have a lot of toys, they have everything, so maybe they don’t value it that way? And I remember my childhood: how I wanted to learn to print! “Edita said.
