Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection had already visited the entire city of Salantai in search of the source of contamination.
Because the tracks are underground, the environmentalists decided to manually excavate them 30 meters from the last contaminated well and found a pipe that was not marked in the diagrams.
Since the available drawings do not correspond to the actual situation, there is a way to find the source of contamination: excavate according to the direction of the pipeline. Excavated every few tens of meters.
According to preliminary data, the fuel flows to heat furnaces. On-site fire and rescue services officers make sure no contaminants get into the hood barriers and pump the contaminated water into special tanks.
The environmentalists are assisted by the employees of the nursing home.
Yesterday, March 1, at night, a report was received about the flow of pollutants to the pond in the city of Salantai. To prevent the spread of pollutants in the Salanto River, environmentalists immediately informed firefighters and rescuers. Firefighters surrounded the contamination site with hood barriers, thus stopping the spread of contaminants.
An Environmental Protection Agency laboratory was also called in to collect samples.
An investigation is underway today to identify the source of the contamination. The polluter faces a fine and will have to compensate for the estimated damage to the environment.
