“I, like many of you, found out about the delay announced today by Pfizer,” von der Leyen told a news conference in Portugal.
“I immediately called the CEO of Pfizer and he explained that the production of the vaccine would be delayed in the next few weeks, but he assured that the full amount of the promised doses in the first quarter would be delivered in the first quarter,” he said.
The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced on Friday a temporary cut in the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine from the end of January to increase production later this winter and during 2021.
The company has indicated that the supply of the vaccine will be reduced until the beginning of February, thus seeking new regulatory approval for production processes aimed at increasing production.
In a letter to the European Commission on Friday, Lithuania, along with other Baltic and Scandinavian countries, expressed “serious concern” about the delay in the BioNTech and Pfizer vaccines, as it represents a risk to the vaccination process.
According to U. von der Leyen, the Pfizer director “personally” promised to ensure that the delay period would be shorter and that all supplies would be restored as soon as possible.
“It was very important to send him a message that we urgently need the promised doses,” he said.
