European basketball at the start of the 2020-2021 season has been significantly slowed down by the coronavirus: matches are constantly postponed due to infections in individual teams.

AX Armani strategist in Milan gave an exceptional approach to the situation Ettore Messina, He proposed to drastically reschedule the schedule. According to an Italian named basketball teacher, the Euroleague should be suspended.

In an open letter, E. Messina expressed his respect for the leaders of all leagues, listing the number of acquaintances accumulated during his long career. In his opinion, the people who control European basketball should forget the principles and pursue a common goal.

“Currently, the only logical solution would be to stop international tournaments and focus on the national championships and finish them in four months, because traveling within countries is easier. In April we would bring back the international tournaments and we would finish them before the Olympic Games, maybe then COVID-19 will be handled ”, commented the strategist.

In her letter, E. Messina herself noted that this would require tremendous cooperation, from the agreement of the leaders of the Euroleague and the FIBA Champions League, to the understanding of the broadcasters and representatives of the championships of various countries. Everything is complicated by the fact that not only the Euroleague or European Cups are postponed, but also the local championship matches. The calendar of the Lithuanian Basketball League (Betsafe-LKL) is already well established, and grandiose changes would not help either.

The script created by Italo does not seem simple, but neither is it impossible. On the contrary, the Greek portal SDNA announces that the Euroleague is also considering this possibility Jordi Bertomeu.

On Thursday, a remote press conference was held, during which J. Bertomeu began a dialogue with the leaders of the national championships about commitments in adjusting schedules. Stopping the Euroleague and halving the season were mentioned among the possible options.

Possible cooperation would also require the cooperation of the FIBA Champions League, and the latter organization is aware of the situation. The main difference is that the regular season of the Euroleague consists of 34 games and the Champions League only 6 games, so this schedule has more flexibility. The FIBA European Cup, which is scheduled to start only in January, also suggests a different approach.

For individual teams, this would also cause additional problems. For example, Olympiacos de Piraeus, who did not play in the Greek championship, would be without a match for four months. Meanwhile, Crvena Zvezda from Belgrade competes in the International Adriatic League and should join the Serbian championship only in the spring, but according to the plan presented, there is no place for that.
