As the Vilnius City Municipality announced on Friday, the brick foundations were dug up by digging the ground in the first building on Olimpiečių Street. According to archaeologist Ramūnas Šmigelskas, who carried out the research, this is likely the base of one of the buildings in the Tsar’s fortress, which was started in 1831.

“The fort included the castle hill, the Lower Castle territory, and other places on the left side of the Neris. On the right bank of the Neris, it covered the area in front of the old Arsenal buildings and the Vilnius mouth to the old Jewish cemetery. The historical plans show at least three buildings on the Neris embankment, fragments of one of which were discovered during archaeological excavations, ”said R. Šmigelskas.

“The uncovered building is represented in almost every plan of the city from 1831 to the 20th century. vine. Photographs of the building in question have even been preserved. Judging by them, the building was demolished after the war, ”says the archaeologist.

The exposed building foundations are made of field stones and pink or yellow bricks. Archaeological excavations have not uncovered the foundations of the entire building.

According to R. Šmigelskas, this is the wall of the building, and the surviving fragments must be found both north and east of the existing excavation.

In the near future, it is planned to study the entire territory with georadar, to carry out the architectural investigation of the building.

Due to the find, reconstruction work must stop for a while.

After further investigation, all information will be sent to the Royal Cultural Heritage Assessment Council of the Department of Cultural Heritage (CRD) for evaluation, and then, taking into account their recommendations, specialists from the municipal company Vilniaus Planas will seek the most suitable solution in changing circumstances.

According to the municipality, the architect Lolita Vileikienė, director of the Neris embankment reconstruction project, has no doubt that the Royal Cultural Heritage Council CRD will evaluate the archaeologists’ find as a valuable feature and therefore order the conservation.

According to the architect, the preserved and reinforced foundations of the tsarist building would fit perfectly as a retaining wall on the terrace projected in that place.
