The meeting of the Government’s National Security Commission is convened by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

The Commission is made up of the Ministers of National Defense, Economy, Foreign Affairs and Interior, the Director of the Department of National Security, the Principal Adviser of the President’s National Security Group, the Director of the Second Department of Operational Services and the Chancellor of the Government.

This commission must assist the Government in making decisions that guarantee national security and coordinate effective inter-institutional cooperation in this area.

Parliamentarians, in turn, will go to the Gintaras Žagunis border firewall on Monday, the Seimas announced.

“Rapid growth and visible trends in illegal migration flows from Belarus are cause for concern,” the report said.

NSGK members will familiarize themselves with the situation at the state border, the installation of a video surveillance system and other border control equipment, together with officials from the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) will discuss the tasks and priorities of the near future. .

According to SBGS, around two hundred five hundred illegal immigrants, mostly Iraqi citizens, have already tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus this year. That’s three times more than in all of 2020.

At the end of May, Aliaksandr Lukashenko told the Belarusian parliament that so far Minsk had detained “drugs and migrants” at the border with Lithuania, and that it would not do so following the international reaction to the forced landing of a passenger plane and the imposition of new sanctions. “Now you will eat them and catch them yourself,” he said.

Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė said during the NSGK meeting last week that Belarusian officials may be involved in the smuggling of immigrants from Belarus. According to her, the increased flow of illegal immigrants is a deliberate policy of the regime against the Lithuanian state.
