Drivers are trying to get away from tripods – an extended way to hide numbers

With the introduction of mobile speed meters by the police, called tripods, traffic accident statistics have changed significantly. From January to the end of June last year, the authorities registered more than 70,000 speeding. In the first half of this year, this number has almost tripled, reaching 193 thousand.

“Now the speedometer can be built anywhere. In the past, drivers knew where a stationary speedometer was standing, so they often reduced their speed on the gauges. Now they don’t know where they are, that’s why we search more, “says Dainius Šalomskas, head of the Vilnius Highway Police.

As a result of the tripod, drivers not only began to form groups on Facebook, where they constantly posted pictures with gauges, but also drove to automotive electronics stores, in search of so-called “radar detectors.”

“This year there is a lot of interest, a lot of inquiries, because tripod radars have appeared, 95 percent of all buyers ask for it, but hearing that they will not protect them, that purchase decreases significantly”, says Laimis Bagdon, director of Autogarsas.

Radar detectors capture conventional speedometers from a distance, but a tripod is different. If installed correctly, this meter is detected too late and leaves no time for maneuvering.

“The detection distance is 15-20 meters. The moment you measure, you get a picture at the same time, in the best of cases what you can achieve is a smile, ”says L. Bagdon.

A small percentage of drivers turn to other illegal means. The photo taken by Marijampolė officials shows a car whose license plates were difficult to see when the lights were on in the dark.

“While driving the car, it was noticed that the license plates were not fully visible, the car stopped and a violation was recorded,” said Martynas Matulevičius, a representative of the Marijampolė police.

In this case, the driver put a reflective strip of light on the car number. The driver hoped the flash of the speedometer would mask the car. As a result, speeding will be avoided.

“We have had two such cases at this time and they had not happened before. We knew about such measures, but the offenders were not arrested, it can be said that the number has increased, because there are already two offenders. It may be related to the appearance of tripods ”, says M. Matulevičius.

It is not difficult to disguise numbers. In a small experiment, TV3 Žinios agreed to be assisted by one of the printers in the capital. The company’s machine is made of reflective dark film warp letters, which are easily attached to the license plate.

“This is a reflective film that is used in advertising, it is mainly used in heavy vehicles to help mark it, or you can put your logo to make it more clear and similar at night,” says Tadas Žukas, production manager of Ink Idea.

Improper use of the film perfectly disguises the license plates. The pasted letters disappear in the dark when shooting with the flash, only the peeled marks are visible.

The attached license plate can also be photographed during the day. True, the effect becomes a little different. The brighter the room, the brighter the signs will be. Unscrupulous drivers can easily buy this film in stores, at a minimum cost of a few euros. It is true that after pasting the stickers they peel off very strongly, the removal of several letters can take up to an hour.

This is not the only tool used by dangerous, cunning and speeding drivers. You can easily buy similar but transparent films online, or special sprays that also disappear into letters in an instant. It is true that the police punish these criminals without mercy.

“It’s sneaky, it’s just not clear how long after the aftermath it can be less fun. We see the intention here, we are really responsible for the falsification of numbers,” says D. Šalomskas.

Driving cars with false, hidden or concealed license plates will incur a fine of 230 euros. It is also possible to lose the right to drive for half a year.
