Dr. Pečeliūnas warned: the situation in the Santara clinics is becoming threatening

“Over the past three weeks, the situation with COVID-19 has been quite stable, but since the middle of last week, we have seen a steady increase in the number of hospitalized patients and, unfortunately, an increase in bed occupancy.

If the number of beds has not increased since mid-August, this week, unfortunately, it will be necessary to increase the number of beds dedicated to treating patients with difficulties in both resuscitation and active treatment departments, ”said V. Pečeliūnas. .

According to the doctor, the problem is that by increasing the treatment resources of patients with COVID-19, the resources for the treatment of other patients are affected.

“There is already a situation where increasing the number of cow beds will start to affect treatment options for non-cow patients,” the doctor explained.

In the spring, up to 900 beds were allocated for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, today, according to V. Pečeliūnas, just under 250 of them have been allocated.

“It just came to our attention then. Approximately 200-250 beds is still the amount that does not affect the provision of other services. Unfortunately, the situation is such that about 80 percent beds and consequently the flow is such that We have no doubt that the need for crib beds will certainly increase. Consequently, these flows may already begin to affect the treatment of non-combatant patients in the near future, “said the doctor.

According to V. Pečeliūnas, the treatment of cystic patients is organized in such a way that the treatment of patients who do not suffer from covidity will suffer as little as possible.

“There are support hospitals, where these patients are referred. Regionally, there is a support hospital in Alytus so that those patients do not have to be transported far, in Ukmergė, the Elektrėnai Hospital helps a lot. There is a Vilnius City Clinical Hospital in Vilnius. The Santara clinics focus on patients who have the most serious diseases or comorbidities and, because of these comorbidities, they need additional specialized help, ”explained V. Pečeliūnas.

Most of the patients who have had to be hospitalized are not vaccinated.

“Unfortunately, in recent weeks we have noticed that there are also vaccinated patients who need hospitalization. But if we evaluate the patients who are in the Department of Resuscitation and Intensive Care, we have data from August, so, out of 27 patients, only one patient had received a full course of vaccination ”, emphasized V. Pečeliūnas.

There were already dead patients who were fully vaccinated against COVID-19. When asked how this could have happened, the doctor explained: “Most of these patients have had diseases that have a very strong effect on the immune system. These are immunosuppressed patients: after organ transplantation, after intensive treatment of blood tumors, when the immune system is severely suppressed. This is the main group of people.

Yet another group is people with very serious illnesses, nursing home patients, patients with so-called end-of-life conditions. Unfortunately, even after vaccination, they fail to avoid the most painful consequences of COVID-19, “lamented V. Pečeliūnas.

The doctor pointed out that, according to the summer data, the patients are getting younger and younger. Half of the patients treated in the intensive care unit were under 61 years and 30% – under 50 m.

“Among those under 50 years of age, only one patient had comorbidities. It means that even relatively young patients who do not have any disease, if they are not vaccinated, are at great risk of entering the intensive care unit,” the doctor warned.
