Vilnius Rytas head coach Donaldas Kairys, who is preparing for a new professional challenge, shared his thoughts two weeks before the start of the season on the preparation stage, the difficulties stemming from the late arrival of the legionnaires and the upcoming jobs.
The Vilnius players played the third match of the marathon of friendly matches. They defeated Kėdainiai “Nevėžis”, Kamianskė “Prometey” and Prienai “CBet”.
The team’s legionnaires did not play in any of these matches, but one of the American trio, Demetrius Jackson, has already arrived in Lithuania.
– Is the situation complicated by the delay in the arrival of the legionaries in preparation for the season?
– Complicated, of course. We try to create combinations to highlight our strengths, but most great basketball players are not in training yet. It’s tricky, but I’m glad we have 12 basketball players and can do all the basic drills and learn the combinations a bit.
– Which player is Andrew Goudelock?
– Awesome scorer, scoring machine. We all know exactly how he plays. Yes, we haven’t seen him play at a high level for a few years due to injury and other things. We know he tried to get back to basketball last season, but it was too short and, according to his doctors, too soon. We don’t know how well he can play, but we do know that Goudelock played sports in the summer, without losing certain skills. We hope your experience goes well with our hungry and energetic youth.
– What can you say about the player Demetrius Jackson?
– Awesome athletic basketball player. From her, we first expect a tough defense so that the player can set the tone for the whole team of how high and how hard it is possible to defend. We also expect vigor, all attacks will start from him, we want to play fast, we want to cross the center line quickly and that will help create that.
– What kind of player is Chris McCullough?
– If it were described in one word, the word universality would work better. He is very tall, with long arms, but also very mobile, capable of chasing the ball and striking from a distance, to break through. It will help us cover many holes in the defense.
– Are you satisfied with the evolution of the team in friendly matches?
– I don’t know if I can judge, because everything is still before my eyes. We learn combinations, we try to get into the rhythm of the game, we get used to speed, we push ourselves into an awkward position where everything must be done faster, with greater precision and clarity. We try to get used to this rhythm.
– There are two weeks until the start of the season. What else does the team have to do?
– Learn combinations, speak and communicate, feel each other and get into the rhythm of the game. There is still a lot to do before our eyes, because we haven’t even seen some basketball players. When they arrive, they will have to enter with great intensity and prepare for the first game.
