Divorce with a romantic partner is often not just an urgent decision that occurs after a barn. It’s a series of decisions, disagreements, and a growing burden of being together, ultimately ending in a breakup. Of course, sometimes a couple’s relationship collapses in an instant, with mysteries revealed or cardinally changing events. However, the researchers say that even normal downloads can be predicted simply by looking at people’s posts on social media.
Researchers have found several thousand newly divorced people on the Reddit network and analyzed their language on social media. It was noticed that usually the signs that a couple will be different start to fade another 3 months before the fateful moment. Also, language on social media doesn’t return to normal for at least 6 months after a breakup, indicating that it takes about that long to fully recover from a painful event.
What are those signs? Researchers say there are increasing numbers of “I”, “we” in messages, words that mean thinking (“thinking”, “deciding”, “feeling”) and indecision. As the analysis slows down, people are talking more informally and personally. These subtle changes were seen not only when talking about relationships, but also when discussing other topics. Many people themselves do not realize how their language changes when they get divorced. These are unconscious changes that are likely caused by doubts, barns, and tension at home.
The researchers observed most of the changes in the written reports during the week of separation. It usually takes people about half a year to get back to normal. However, there were those who returned to their previous mode of communication only after a year or more.
